Why is it that when a women gets raped, calls the cops, gets taken to the hospital, gets checked out by doctors and nurses, then simple get sent home. Only to find out that a few weeks later she is pregnant and hasnât been sexually active. It is plainly obvious that the pregnancy was due to the rape, yet if she as an adult makes the decision to abort the pregnancy she is looked down upon. Mean while everyone has forgotten about the guy who raped her and caused all of this to happen. In New Mexico, State Rep. Cathrynn Brown introduced a law âwhich would require rape victims to carry their pregnancies to term during rape trials or face charges of “tampering with evidence.”â
This is what the bill states, “Tampering with evidence shall include procuring or facilitating an abortion, or compelling or coercing another to obtain an abortion, of a fetus that is the result of criminal sexual penetration or incest with the intent to destroy evidence of the crime.”, followed up with, âIf a woman had an abortion after being raped, she and her doctor would be charged with a felony punishable by up to three years in state prison, reports ThinkProgress.org.â Brown then goes on to say that this bill will help rape victims by using the child as evidence to catch the rapist throughout New Mexico.
âPat Davis of ProgressiveNow New Mexico said this in a statement that the bill is “blatantly unconstitutional and “The bill turns victims of rape and incest into felons and forces them to become incubators of evidence for the state. According to Republican philosophy, victims who are âlegitimately rapedâ will now have to carry the fetus to term in order to prove their case.”â I full agree with Pat Davis on his point in regards to being unconstitutional, the part I do not agree with at all is what this Representative for New Mexico is trying to force rape victims to go through.
