In Confucianism, the human nature is perceived as being good. Everyone has the potential to be a good person, even if they are evil. They believe that the harmony of the world revolves around the five constant relationships: emperor to subject, parent to child, older sibling to younger sibling, spouse to spouse, and friend to friend.

The Confucian way of living is not very different from the traditional Chinese way of living, but Confucius, the founder of the religion, felt that an emperor of China changed the morals and values of the citizens of China. The ruler enforced strict punishments and laws, so the people of China were mean and learned how to hate and be violent.

Confucius believed that people could still learn how to live in happiness, with peace and harmony. His goal for people to follow was called ren, which was humane goodness. Everyone is capable of good, Confucius reasoned, and the only reason people become bad is because of the wrongdoings of the rulers.

His teachings included the studies of the Five Classics: History, Poetry, Changes, Rites, and Spring and Autumn Annals. Some say there was a sixth Classic – Music, but it is not talked about much. Instead of treating some people as higher than other people, everyone should treat each other as equals and show love to oneself, and show respect, even for the dead. In the home, an altar should be kept somewhere, with pictures of the ancestors and gods should be showcased. Traditionally, the woman of the house lights incense daily, and on special occasions or holidays, freshly cooked food is also offered to the ancestors and gods.

How realistic is the Confucian way of life in todays lifestyle? Not very likely, in my opinion. I do not think that people these days can find it deep down inside of them to be good people and to have the same set of standards and morals as the Chinese citizens did back then. If this idea was realistic, we would not have any wars between countries and there would not be discrimination, because everyone is treated as an equal. People would not hate one other, be envious, or commit any crimes. There would be no wrongdoing in the world, and as nice of an idea as that may sound like, it
