The people of Oceania were devoted to the party. No one would ever think to question the party. Yet on the other hand, some people did not fully believe in what the party was telling them. In fact, most people were experiencing “doublethink”. Doublethink is when you actually believe in two contradictory ideas. People of the part believed in war with Eurasia, but when they thought about it, they did not believe in anything they were being told. Winston was arrested for doing exactly this. In his brain he believed in the resistance against Oceania. After work and during his time with Julia he began to realize there is no war. Winston was arrested as a thought criminal. “It occurred to Winston that for the first time in his life he was looking, with knowledge, at a member of the Thought Police.” (Orwell 224). Can the brain actually believe in two completely opposite ideas? I believe that everyone experiences the doublethink process. When you pick up a magazine such as “People” or “Star” and look at the cover: OLSEN TWINS ADDICTED TO DRUGS, you dont actually believe that those two young and innocent girls would ever do such a thing. Then there is the thought in the back of your head, “what if?” So you pick up the magazine and begin to read it, becoming interested in the article and ultimately purchasing that magazine knowing that the article has no truth. There are situation in life where a person does not know what to believe. In reaction to that they believe both ideas at different points in time. Doublethink happens everyday in little situation that a person does not tend to notice. But when you dont know whether to believe your own government because a part of you know that the world you live in is a lie, what do you believe?
