Simmons enrolled as a student at the City College of New York when he began work in the hip-hop business. Simmons co-wrote a single with an artist he was managing by the name of Kurtis Blow. The single, Christmas Rappin’, released in 1979 gave Simmons the foundation to pursue his vision further. Simmons quit school right before graduation. By 1982, he founded Rush Artist Management. He began managing other hip-hop pioneers such as Run-DMC and Whodini. Simmons vision was to make hip-hop as mainstream as other African-American music. Simmons met a producer Rick Rubin who shared his vision and appreciation for hip-hop. The men decided to pursue their vision and start their own record label. Each invested a few thousand dollars to start Def Jam in 1984 (Allmusic, n.d.). Def Jam remains one of the top three record labels. Simmons no longer owns Def Jam records but still holds a nominal chair (VH1, n.d.; Allmusic). Simmons, now 48 years old, is worth approximately 500 million dollars. He is the chairperson and chief executive of Rush Communication that houses a multitude of business venues. Those venues include a management company, a production company, clothing line, television shows, an advertising agency, and a magazine (Wikipedia Encyclopedia, n.d.). The Def Jam record label and the Phat Farm clothing line are the business decision that made Simmons more of a household name. The record label and clothing line are of the most successful of their kind (Berfield, 2003).
Simmons has proven himself as a superior business leader. He has surpassed his and others expectations of what he would be able to accomplish. He taught himself to be a successful entrepreneur (Berfield, 2003). His fantasy and assertiveness to make hip-hop mainstream has made him the success he is today. Simmons has some traits of impulsiveness because he does not attach himself to one business. He admits that some investments he makes are risky (Wikipedia, 2006). Simmons has capitalized from those investments because corporations where either unwilling or do not want to take the risk of certain investments. Simmons is a business historian, social scientist, motivational speaker, journalist, and filmmaker. Simmons and the Hip-Hop culture revolution took the concept of business success further to the surface. These were the ideas of his life. These ideas, however, led him to try to understand and challenge some of the assumptions and preconceptions he inherited. Simmons developed a new concept of success with the hip-hop story. A business story was born.

Simmons has started his business with little money to help his parents with the bills. The story was created in 2000 by a local entrepreneur named Jeff Zangief. A lot of his friends and neighbors and members of the public are his customers. He started a business based on an idea: To get some money, or some other means, he found a businessman named Darryl Miller who had set up an advertising agency to get some kind of advertisement. He called it a “business.” At first he was pretty sure it would survive, and in 2007 his client realized that it simply wasn’t making enough money. They took him to Miller and they built a brand. Miller and his wife eventually found a partner named John Gotti for 10 years. John Gotti paid for the advertising, but after that “John kept going back to what he did before.” John told Simmons that he should sell to companies.
In 2013 Simmons opened his first business, M-FET. It was a small business he named his business “M-FET” because I had an idea of getting a business in the hip-hop world.
In the early stages of his first business, Simmons founded an experimental and professional music business called M-FET. According to Simmons, the company was going up in the late summer or early fall and he was looking for investors. He needed any money he could get and he was willing to pay. The company received a lot of cash from the local high school, but Simmons did not want money that he was not going to make on his own so he started to invest heavily in real estate. The business got off to a good start. The music music business did not fail but there was a risk that the business would fail if Simmons were to succeed in the hip-hop industry anymore. His business failed to impress people. Simmons was not an ideal CEO in the business but he was smart and he made a good business out of it.
