My reason for becoming a Nurse PractitionerI want to become a nurse practitioner so that I can have more autonomy in patients’ care. The profession of nursing continues to evolve and there is a demand for more primary healthcare providers in my community.  I want to embark on this educational journey because I believe that I have the qualities to make a difference in people lives. Due to the ever evolving changes in the healthcare, field nurses are required to have more education to ensure that they can provide a better quality care by incorporating evidence-based practices interventions in our patients’ care to have better outcomes. I work in a long term care facility and there is a rise in the number of middle age adults requiring long term care related to the poor management of chronic illnesses such as; diabetes, hypertension and heart diseases.  Many of the patients that I care for lacked the knowledge to care for themselves in the community. Nurse practitioners advocate for their patients, by educating them and the community on preventative measures, as well as ways to manage their disease. As a nurse practitioner I can provide patients with healthcare teaching on making healthier choices that will hopefully prevent and minimize the debilitating effects of chronic illness. So many of these diseases are wreaking havoc on small and disadvantaged communities. Nurse practitioners are healthcare providers who strive and advocate for quality of care in our communities. I love nursing and believe that there is hope of a healthier America. I live in a small town in Mississippi. We have two urgent care clinics and one hospital. The hospital is small with about 25 Med-Surgical bed, 5 ICU beds, a small surgical suite and about 7 L&D beds. The emergency department sometimes has a waiting time of greater than 4 hours. There are more and more urgent care clinics being opened and utilized. Doctors are simply unable to meet the demands of these ever expanding healthcare services. Doctors are also welcoming nurse practitioners into their private practices as well as other care healthcare facilities in which they have patients admitted.  Due to the passage of the Affordable Care Act, as well as the  fact that healthcare is expanding and also becoming more and more complex, nurse practitioners are better able to use their advanced education, higher levels of critical thinking and decision-making skills to care for these complex healthcare issues, all the while collaborating with the MD and other healthcare professionals regarding patients’ care.  If we can provide more nurse practitioners in the urgent care clinics this will be a start in the fight against chronic illness.
