In todays world where there is so many electronics that can make everything quick and simple. Children get more fun out of playing video games alone then being out playing with their friends. Exercise has taken a back seat to this new lifestyle but what has to be understood is that if you want a child to be able to use those electronic in the future they are going to have to exercise their bodies to get the oxygen and nutrients that the brain desires to be able to function normally. It is important as educators that we educate the child the best we can. We would not be educating the childs full potential if we took physical education out of the school day. (Floyd, 2011). Physical Education is one of the most important parts of a childs education process. With exercise you are not just helping your physical body but you are helping mental and emotional parts also. The effects of exercise increase the brains ability to learn and make connections throughout our lifespan and especially during the brains formative years of childhood. “Physical activity also increases the blood flow to our brain and the amount of oxygen our brain receives. Recess activities that are designed to increase physical activity fuels childrens brains with oxygen and also feeds neurotripins that help increase the connections between the brains neurons and stimulate neuron growth. The benefits are better cognition, memory, and reduced areas of depression.” (Boushh, 2010).
Exercise is way more than just physical over the years it has be found that exercise benefits body and helps the brain to work better. Since the brain is involved in everything we do at school a child will benefit more from have physical education then from not having physical education. (Jensen, 2008). The brain gives the body better circulation from the oxygen and nutrients and the body helps the brain to think better by using the ability it has to exercise. It all works together as it was designed to do. Things like the ability to use sensorimotor, Jensen states that, “the movement pleasure link in the brain may not develop and this is a key factor in being able to use our senses. Which means it is essential to exercise our bodies and develop these links to better use our senses.” (Jensen, 2008). Gross motor exercises help to increase the mood by releasing dopamine into the blood stream. Aerobic exercise helps to improve thing and learning because it helps the brain to trigger a faster adrenaline response. These responses help in everyday life when we face challenges and have to cope with stress.
That brings me to my next point Mental Health. Physical activity has shown to have many psychological and mental benefits in addition to the physical ones. For
