Green Technology should be a priority to us all. Our planet Earth is somewhat failing to evolve to the mass consumption of natural resources we have a duty to do what we can to replenish those to the best of our ability. What we can do on a personal level is quite simple and the signs are literally everywhere.
RECYCLE – REDUCE – REUSE
It may sound a bit silly, but growing up as a Girl Scout I was taught many things about this marvelous planet we live on. For example, littering is never an option. I have been known to pull over and teach a lesson about the subject when my child has tossed something out the window! Some have stated that is a ridiculous way to react, I must disagree. How will they know it is not as appropriate thing to do with trash if a responsible adult does not teach them? As a part of the lesson not only do I make them track down their trash, but I also have them pick up other peoples trash as well.
From a young age, I have recycled. Anything and everything that can be recycled and used again will be. In fact, my household of six recycles more than we throw away. In the recent weeks my children and I have kept record of our recycling versus actual trash. My original guestimate of “six to eight bags of recycling each week and mere 1-3 bags of trash” was very accurate! Just earlier today while running errands I dropped off 3 – 13 gallon bags of plastic and aluminum and a medium sized box of paper. All of those items were collected over the weekend. That is only a two-day span! Seeing my children be involved is very rewarding. Knowing that I am teaching them to be aware and proactive is very important to me. They enjoy helping, sorting, even unloading the recyclables.
We also make a point to turn lights off when they are not being used and so on. While not using certain electronic devices they are unplugged. A wide spread misconception that if you are not using an electronic it is not using power, is false. If you think about it, how much energy and money could you save just by unplugging items that are not in use? Even if you are not into being “Green”, everyone enjoys saving money. Also, consider checking your furnace and air conditioner regularly. By keeping your A/C unit free of debris and possibly shaded can really help you save. Having your furnace serviced as the manufacture recommends is a great way to stay energy effective. Changing the filter can easily improve the way your home is being heated and cooled. Even as soon as your next energy bill you can see a noticeable savings. The average sized family in the United States uses approximately 30 kWh of electricity each day, which adds up to about $1600 a year.
Personally, I think people could do more to help our environment thrive. The Earth is a magical place that can actually repair its self-much like the human body. However, once a certain amount
