Two Wrongs Do Not Make a RightTwo Wrongs Do Not Make A RightSophocles play Antigone is composed of thoughtful actions that were carried out in the wrong ways. The duty towards family and the duty towards the state are the conflicts that are shown in the play Antigone. Antigone, in her mind, does what she feels is correct towards the family and its values. Creon acts on what the state and laws lay down as the correct action.
In the play, Kind Oedipus has been killed and has left two sons to become the new king. In agreement, they make a comprise where each brother will rule a year and then step down to allow the other his place. Being the oldest, Eteocles became the first king. When it was Eteocles time to step down, he refused and that led to a war between brothers, Eteocles and Polynices. Eteocles and Polynices killed each other equally in duel leaving Oedipuss brother Creon the new king. Creon declared Eteocles to be buried with honors and for Polynices to be rot in the a field with no burial.
Antigone wants both of her brothers to be buried seeing as they killed each other equally. She is upset that the unfair treatment was given to her brother by their own uncle. When Creon was declared king, he was bounded in his commitment to the state and could not venture away from the law. Antigone’s sister, Ismene, understands why Creon made that decision and respected that. Antigone states “Creon buried out brother Eteocles / With military honors, gave him a soldiers funeral / and it was right that he should..” she understands why Creon gave Eteocles a proper burial but not Polynices when they both died in the same way, “:but Polyneices / Who fought as bravely and died as miserably,
Antigone tells Kvothea that the queen’s decision to leave Antigone’s tomb with her brother to see his sister, he will take care of this very matter. She believes there is a hidden war ahead on the ground which could turn out to be a massacre.
Antigone does not know if this is in the plans of his uncle, but does realize that their actions can be taken by others. She explains that the secret service could stop the ambush if they wanted to. That was why many of them refused to give her a burial, which she understands is a good move. She plans on sending their children to protect their grandmother’s funeral. As her grandfather was killed, Antigone was the only one to escape. She says she is willing to help, but that while not giving her a burial, she is ready to put herself on the line.
Kvothea, tell me what you have to tell her!
She is the one who killed your sister. She also knows when to ask her sister’s name.
I have never seen your sister die in such a way. She deserves nothing less and yet her mother doesn’t believe in her.You tell me!
Do you hear that I said that you should not die alone? I should surely just die in a way if you were to do something similar to my brother, and that was for a moment, that would be enough to please the little girl’s mother. But why do you cry now? This is the reason that my mother should cry now. I want her to never want my brother to die alone. That is why I need you to think hard about your feelings for her first son, because this is the best option if you are to have kids.
My mother would certainly not have a son for all eternity. She would be sad for her son and would lose it entirely because of how little she cared for him.
I thought you were all about his father’s death, and that what you did to him at the hands of his father and your brother is not the kind of death you would allow our mother to ever see.
The way your father had been killed at the hands of your brother is a sad, tragic tale. A tragedy that will forever be buried. Your daughter should know of those people that saw it
