The element that I chose from the play Dr. Faustus is Faustus himself and the need for his curiosity to be filled. Faustus strikes a deal with Mephostophilis who is one of Lucifers helpers. In return Faustus will go to hell. Faustus believes its a good deal at the time but in the end we both know he regrets it.
When Faustus states; “To give me whatsoever I shall ask” ( Act 1 Scene III Line 91) comes the beginning of the end. Once the 24 year deal is set Faustus is overwhelmed by his new powers and cant believe the things he can do. Instead of using the “gift from Hell” for good he decides it would be more worthwhile to bring back Helen of Troy and other types of magical productions. Faustus had many times when he could have helped out his town or country if he would have just used his powers in a proper manner. All 24 years went to pleasing himself. Faustus use of the powers given to him, play a major role in the storyline.
As his days are numbered Faustus realizes it wasnt worth selling his soul to the devil for the powers he reserved. He wants to rid himself of Lucifer and crawl back under Gods control but it is too late as he is taken into the “Hell Mouth” by a group of devils. Like a quote Ive heard many times, “Curiosity killed the cat.” Once again it proves true as Faustus disappears into the firry depths of Hell.
Dr. Faustus is still easy to relate to even in todays society. Whether its looking at decisions theyve made in their own life or by others, theres always that questions of “What if?”
Personally I can relate to this writing because I can compare it to the steroid situation in baseball. Players are using anything the can get their hands on to compete at the highest level possible. Like Faustus, they are taking advantage of the resources for a certain amount of time. But once they are caught using or
