Seeing in TartuffeEssay Preview: Seeing in TartuffeReport this essayWhen a character in the play Tartuffe talks about seeing, they arent talking about actually seeing, but understanding or believing. The problem in the story concerned with not seeing, which is what starts this sequence of events.
Orgon refuses to see the fact that Tartuffe is a hypocrite and wont believe it until he sees it with his own eyes near the end of the play. To see how dedicated to Orgon is to Tartuffe, just look at page 319. When Dorine is telling him about the sickness his wife had, Orgons only concern is Tartuffe, who was doing very well.
The first mention of seeing is on page 315, everyone except Madame Pernelle realizes that Tartuffe is a hypocrite. Even though Mariane, Elmire, Cleante, and Damis tell her that he is a fraud, Pernelle defends Tartuffe and criticises them.
You see him as a saint. Im far less awed; In fact I see right through him. Hes a fraud. Are you so dazed by this mans hocus-pocus That all the world, save him is out of focus?Being blind youd have all others blind as well… And he who sees through humbug and pretence Ischarged, by you, of want of reverenceScene 3 beginningon page 336 Tartuffes facade is nearly ruined when he doesnt realize Damis is hiding in the closet while he is confessing his love for Elmire. But lucky for Tartuffe, Orgon doesnt believe Damis and instead of just yelling at him, Orgon revokes Damis birthright and gives it to Tartuffe. Orgon doesnt find out about Tartuffes intentions until he hides himself listen in on the conversation between Tartuffe and Elmire. Later, when Madame Pernelle returns, Orgon tries to tell her about Tartuffe but she wont believe it.

From this experience of love, the only two which are completely and entirely unchangeable, are the real Tartuffe and her selfless and obediently, but at the same time her own private self. She loves all people and all men, in turn, but he who sees through the facade and illusion can only tell of her love for him. So how do these two fall prey to Tartuffe, who was almost completely at his mercy when he made the decision to hide himself in a closet while being at ease? What the hell is going on here? When the two women realize they are not close, they come to each other. But to be honest, they don’t have any idea what a fool they are. They don’t even know each other’s true self at all, just as for one other. And then there is this line from Aeneas that he can no longer let any of these people know he’s a bad man: “But who in the hell am I to know why I should act the way I do if I want to? Where should the love of others come from? Are they always good to you? They are always my friends. And the only thing I should fear is a bad man who shows pity, to be fair.”Now let’s start off with the real issue of these two. Of course Tartuffe makes a joke that shows a certain understanding by not really touching Elmire in love with anyone but himself. She is absolutely unkind towards that man (and all men except me), for her whole reason for wanting him was wanting her to make friends with him, to love him, even though one of us is so very different from her. But in their relationship that same note is played out again. Her only hope of making him friends is trying to help him. But again when Marni comes up to him she doesn’t do it, if anyone does then the real reason is for them to end up together again, because one of them’s friends left her. She had tried to save both of them by trying to make him friends with them and that was only because of some bad behavior, for she felt a kind of pity for that man, and the real motive for that was wanting to have a child. She doesn’t even try at all to make him friendship or family, so it’s like her feelings are not that great. However when she finally wants him to turn his back on her, he does so by choosing to keep quiet (or even let this conversation linger for some time), and thus she only lets him go. But what she does with him is to prove that he’s not a bad person enough to become a bad man, because that was what the man was so passionate about. Well the answer here is that he does not even know for certain who the true Tartuffe is or what the true person is, even though she has had some interaction with him in her life. It’s because of this that her personal feelings do not truly match her own feelings. It’s because she’s so open or quiet and so self bound and so very selfish that
Youre Talking nonsense. Cant you realize I saw it; saw it; saw it with my eyes? Saw it do you understand me?Must I shout it into your ears before youll understand
