Police Role Descriptions in the Media
Depiction, in analytic philosophy, is pictorial representation; however, not all representation with a picture is depiction. Alternative analyzes hold that depiction is a symbol system, which is syntactically dense, semantically dense and rather replete, or that it should be defined by a perceptual effect such as illusion, seeing-in, and imaginary seeing, or experienced resemblance. Another approach is to define depictive representation by recognition abilities. Other debates about the nature of depiction include the relationship between seeing something in a picture, and seeing it face-to-face, whether depictive representation is conventional, how understanding novel depictions is possible, the aesthetic and ethical value of depiction and the nature of realism in pictorial art (Wikipedia, n.d.).
Method
In the following four articles, it will be discussed how each article depicts the related role of crime fighter, social servant, order maintainer, and crime preventer and whether it is believed as real or image depiction.
Crime fighter
A crime fighter is a major role of the police that emphasizes crime fighting and the article discussed police officers indicted for a shooting. Three of the five police officers whose 50-bullet barrage killed an unarmed man on his wedding day were indicted in a case that heightened racial tensions and renewed allegations the citys officers are too fast on the trigger. The three officers fired the most shots confrontation that killed a 23-year-old and wounded two of his friends as they left a bachelor party at a strip club in Queens. The shooting stirred outrage around New York City and led to accusations of racism against police. The deceased was black, as are two of his friends who were wounded in the shooting. The case also brought back painful memories of other infamous police shootings in New York City; however, these officers in this case were acquitted of criminal charges. Police union officials defended the officers, arguing they were responding to reasonable suspicions the victims were armed and dangerous (Associated Press, 2007).
Depiction
This article depicts the related role of police officers in a real depiction in a city as New York where there are many crimes committed daily. Because of these crimes and so many of them involving shootings or criminals with guns makes it hard for the officers not to be trigger-happy.
Social servant
This is a main role because they are called to check on the well-being of an individual, give a ride to a stranded individual, sort out problems at domestic disturbances, console victims of a crimeЖchief part of a police officers job.
Two United States Border Patrol agents were killed while on duty after their patrol vehicle rolled several times on a scarcely traveled highway in southwest New Mexico. The agents were assigned to the Border Patrols Lordsburg station. Their names were not released pending family notification. However, news of the tragedy spread among friends who described one of the men, from Pennsylvania, as smart, likable and dedicated to his job. Both said their friends started patrolling in November and wanted to be part of the Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue team, known as BORSTAR. The two men are the first Border Patrol agents to die in the line of duty in the El Paso sector since 1999. Garza was part of the horse patrol unit and stationed in Lordsburg. Acting El Paso Border Patrol sector Chief Paul Beeson in a statement, “This is a stark reminder of the risks our frontline employees accept each day as they work to secure our nation” (Medina, J.L., 2007).
Depiction
This article depicts the related role of the Border Patrol Agents that lost their lives doing what they wanted to do and loved doingЖhelping people.
Order maintainer
This role takes care of disturbances, such as loud parties, unruly juveniles, or directing traffic at an accident scene.
A prison warden and two top assistants were removed from their posts after an inmate was beaten and choked allegedly by four guards. Investigators say the inmate was removed from his cell and taken out of the range of security cameras, then beaten on the head and choked into unconsciousness because he had filed a grievance about his treatment. The prison-boss fired the four guards and then he removed the warden and assistant warden who are pending reassignment. “Some of the officers, and perhaps some of the leaders, thought they could take the law onto themselves,” McDonough said. McDonough was named secretary of the Department of Corrections 13 months ago, after his predecessor was arrested for accepting kickbacks from vendors doing business with the states prisons. The prison houses 1,062 men under medium and minimum security (Kallestad, B., 2007).
