Police Stress
There is stress that comes along with the policing profession and often times the community does not think about this. The police officials are to always be there to protect and serve, but what do they really have to go through and furthermore, how do they handle it? Sometimes the stress that is endured will have an effect on their personal life, social life, and even the officers job.
External Stress can be very real to an officer. It is when real dangers are existing or threats. This can be high speed pursuits or gun run (Axia College, 2005). Stress of this level can be fatal to an officers social life in causing them to not have time for friends, personal life could be interrupted in longer hours at work, and job performance could be affected due to being tired and cranky, affecting the performance (Axia College, 2005). It may be useful to social and personal life for the officer by providing enough time when allotted to really spend with loved ones. Getting adequate rest and sleep will really be beneficial to the performance of the officer.
Organizational Stress can be stress produced by elements inherent in the quasi-military character of the police service, such as constant adjustment to changing tours of duty, odd working hours, working holidays, and the strict discipline imposed on officers (Axia College, 2005). When and if this happen one may become really adapted to the surroundings, often believing there his harm in a social environment. The personal and job related things levels could escalate to a point of feeling depressed. This would not aid in job performance either. By remembering the fact that the job and mission that is their duty for the day, is just that a job, one has to remember that I am able to go home at the end of the day.
Personal Stress can be difficult to deal with and many have to deal with this particular form of stress. It is a stress that involves the interpersonal characteristics and difficulties of being an officer (Axia College, 2005). There could possibly be times that officer are not getting along and may result in not wanting to be at the job. This could affect the job performance and even make for aggravated officers that could not carry out orders correctly due to not wanting to work together.
