The Mitochondria is known as the powerhouse of the cell. It was discover by many different scientist, Richard Altman being one of them. Though it was Carl Brenda who was responsible for naming the Mitochondria in 1898. It comes from the Greek language from the words mitos and granule. For without it we not are able to live because we not have the needed to function in ever day life. This is way the Mitochondria organelle is vital part of our existences. The cristae is located the folds of the inner membrane.
Located inside the cytoplasm part of our cell our mitochondria are made up of two different membranes an inner membrane and an outer membrane. The outer membrane is made of a smooth surface of protein molecules. Inside the inner there are many flowing folds called cristae which is a place where ATP is enhanced. ATP is adenosine triphosphate, or in other words a type of chemical energy. The reason why the ATP is folded is because it increases work space and makes more ATP.
Inside the Mitochondria there are many different parts. The Matrix is a space inside the inner membrane. It holds many of the protein, DNA and the Ribosome. The cristae are located in the compartments of the inner membrane.
Mitochondrion earns its nickname mini cell by being able to survive on its own. Due to the fact that this organelle has DNA and Ribosome the Mitochondria could be its own cell. The reason why its called mini is because the Mitochondria is only five tenths to ten micrometers big. In just one cell you can find over a thousand Mitochondria.
Of course how many there are based on what that particular cell is used for. A muscular cell would need a lot more because its constantly contracting and working hard. Where as a nerve cell is used to only transmit information so it wouldnt nearly as many Mitochondria. SO while one of you cells could only have ten mitochondria another one could have ten million.
Like any organelle that we have the Mitochondria has a specific purpose which is to act as the digestive system of our cells. By breaking down the chemicals in food the Mitochondria creates energy for the cell to use. That energy is called a Adenosine Triphosphate or for short its called ATP. The process in which ATP is formed has three different important steps. Those different steps are called Gylcolyss, Krebs cycle, and the final is Electron Transportation.
The Gylcolyss takes place in the cytoplasm which is where the Mitochondria is located. After coming into your body glucose from what you eat enters through the cell membrane. Then it enters the cytoplasm where it is split into halves and the broken Carbon creates some Adenosine Triphosphate. That concludes the first step in creating Adenosine Triphosphate.
Then the next step called Krebs cycle starts. This step is named after the British biochemist that discovered it Hans Krebs. A
