This course enables students to grasp foundational information technology concepts as well as leading-edge topics including the intelligent decision support systems, enterprise network environment, E-Business, intranets, extranets, group collaboration, and other emerging technologies and organizational trends in MIS.Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes:Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:Analyze various aspects revolving around the strategic role of managing information. Identify and discuss the purposes of various hardware components comprising the computer system. Compare and contrast Internet, Intranet and Extranet, and discuss the benefits and pitfalls of each. Identify and discuss the strategic role of major business applications software. Discuss current operating systems and network support utilities commonly found in a variety of IS environments. Discuss and contrast methodologies used to redesign the information infrastructure of the organizational enterprise. Describe factors for managing systems security and implementing systems wide information controls. COB Learning Goals:  In addition to the course objectives stated above, this course contributes to the learning of certain skills determined by the faculty in the College of Business at Montana State University-Billings in accordance with AACSB guidelines.  In this course, the following learning goals are addressed:LG1.Communication:  You will benefit from participating in class exercises and discussions.  Feel free to ask questions! You have the opportunity in this class to practice and work towards continued improvement in your writing skills. Students will submit written papers and case analyses. Students are expected to use their word processing, grammar and spelling tools and to improve their writing skills.LG2. Critical and creative thinking:  Students are expected to apply techniques developed in the class discussion and assigned readings to the assignments and their project.  LG3. Quantitative skills:  Topics covered in the course include; Excel analytics, data mining techniques, and Monte Carlo simulation.  You will have an opportunity to practice these methods through tutorials and your term paper LG4. Ethics:  Two of the case assignments ask you to address an ethical issue and respond with a course of action.LG5. Information technology:  You will have the chance to demonstrate proficiency in using the computers, understanding of computer components and the role of Information Technologies in Business, basic Internet and email, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and software add-ins to Excel.
