Object-oriented programming languages are programs that are written according to objects within that program. For example, buttons or drop-down menus are objects that are found in many different object-oriented programs. Programmers write the code according to that button or menu. Object-oriented programs process information according to the actions of the user. When a user uses an object within that program, the object will do processing according to what the programmer has coded that object to do.
This process makes object-oriented programming a more efficient program due to its ability to break the process down according to what the user wants. The user could use all the objects within that program or could just use some of the objects, if that is how the program is written. At each object the program would process simply what that object is coded to do.
Additionally with object-oriented programming, programmers could save code and re-use it. For example, the Colorado Springs Fire Department relies on a shift calendar in many of its programs. With the need to use this calendar in many programs, the programmers can save that code and reuse it within the different programs they are writing without having to rewrite the code over and over.
Generations 1-4 of programming languages required the programmer to write a lot more code line for line. This process also takes much more time.
