Background of PSA Singapore
Port of Singapore Authority was originally formed as a statutory board in 1964.Therefore, it did not have a founder. The current chairman is Fock Siew Wah and Chief Executive Officer is Tan Chong Meng. It was renamed PSA Corporation Limited in 1997 which PSA does not stand for any meaning now.
The mission of PSA is to be the port operator of choice in the worlds gateway hubs, renowned for best-in-class services and successful partnerships. People working in PSA believe in four core values. PSAhas excellent connectivity to different parts of the world. Calling themselves “World’s Port of Call”, Singapore-based PSA Corporation also manages ports and offices in Panama, Colombia, Argentina, Thailand, China, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Italy, Turkey and so on.In its Singapore headquarter, there are total of 6 berths in Pasir Panjang Terminal. Other ports are Tanjong Pagar Terminal,Keppel Terminal and Brani Terminal. It also cooperates with various brands to have joint-ventures. For example, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), COSCO, CMA CGM, Pacific International Lines (PIL).
Business
PSA mainly focuses on terminal, container services and shippers’ services. PSA is the major container port in Singapore. Taking advantage of Singapore superior geographical location where located in the centre of Southeast Asia and near the major shipping routes, PSA provides transshipment service. Transshipment means small vessels discharge containers to PSA and PSA loaded them onto large vessels which will then carry the shipment to their final destination. This method can reduce both number of journeys and the cost of shipment.
PSA handles one-fifth of global container transshipment. Terminals in PSA Singapore handled 33.35 million TEUs while other PSA’s ports handled 40.89 million TEUs.Over 80-percent of containers arrive Singapore are going to transshipped to another port of call.Maritime services make up to 7% of Singapore GDP.
PSA provides three main services. ReeferCare and ChemCare are focusing on two specialist cares on temperature-sensitive cargo and dangerous chemical cargo respectively. ReeferCare able to monitor the status of reefer cargo by providing timely and accurate information. PSA also provides value-added services like hot and cold treatment if client specified. ChemCare ensure chemicals are professionally cared by pre-shipment inspection before delivered to Dangerous Goods Warehouse. Furthermore, PSA helps collect empty containers and reefer containers through BoxCare. Container depot services help the smooth reuse process of containers. The services include washing the containers with chemicals, painting the containers, repairs containers and etc.
