Betts, R. K. (2012). Conflict After the Cold War. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Education.
Betts writes about the Cold War has influenced in the world and what conflicts are created after it. There are many ideological arguments to define war and peace. The purpose of this book is analysing the role of power in terms of politics, military technology and strategy in the areas of peace and war. The research method is that the author investigated different historical events by several theories such as imperialism, capitalism, liberalism and international realism to explain the causes and effects of conflicts after the Cold War. Also, the book shows strongly the process of globalisation by explaining the growth of trade, the development of communication and the influences of western theory such as liberalism. In addition, the feature of modernization, capitalism is used as a significant issue of conflicts. This book is very useful for my essay to explain what the Cold War is and what the international conflicts among countries are. The limitation of this book is that there are no enough explanations of practical activities of civil society organization to solve international conflicts. It is too ideological. The conclusion of this book is that war has many theories and conflicts and peace is related to how the balance of power is built in the world. It will be used in my essay as current global issues such as the conflicts of cold war and peace.
Williams, B., & Newman, A. (2006). Japan, Australia and Asia-Pacific Security. Madison Ave, NY: Routledge.
Ishizuka writes about the peacekeeping activities of the UN in Japan and Australia. The author states that the peacekeeping policies in both countries are significant for the peace of Asia-Pacific region. The purpose of this chapter is to analyse how the UN peacekeeping operation has activated and what policies have been made for preventing conflict in the countries. The research method is that historical and current activities of the UN peacekeeping in both countries are organised, and what effects and results were created is discussed. The policies were made for not only the both countries but also entire Asia-Pacific region. The author mainly states that there are two points of the UN peacekeeping policies which should be considered. First point is that all UN members should have equal opportunities to contribute to peacekeeping. Second point is that the UN does not have any authority to choose which countries participate in. The conclusion of this book is that peacekeeping should be considered as the important factor in terms of the international security. This chapter is very useful for my essay as an example to support how the UN has activated for preventing war. Peacekeeping could mean avoiding conflicts and even war.
