Qantas airway is an Australian airline company. The groups strong network infrastructure enables
it to gain access to key markets as well as enhance the quality of its delivery services. However,
competition from low cost airlines could impact the groups market share across all its geographic
regions. (Datamonitor, 2010, p. 5)
Strengths
Robust route network
The group operates more than 4,700 flights each week to 72 destinations in Australia and
around the world. The Jet star brands operate around 1,900 flights each week to 50 destinationsin Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and the US. Qantas Link operates around 1,900 flights each
week to 54 metropolitan and regional destinations across Australia. In FY2009, Qantas Airways
increased daily services between Sydney and Shanghai; Mumbai services were reconfigured to
three times per week via Singapore, increasing connectivity through other Australian capital cities;
and increased from five to six return flights per week between Sydney and Johannesburg. It also
launched non-stop Sydney-Buenos Aires services, with three services per week using B747-400
aircraft. In addition, the group increased trans-Tasman frequencies in New Zealand, integrating
with a rescheduled daily Auckland-Los Angeles service to provide connection to Qantas daily
service to New York (Qantas Annual review 2010).
Subsequently, Qantas Airways introduced twice-weekly Kalgoorlie-Adelaide service and
commenced Cairns-Perth services and increased Gold Coast services. Jet star has also grown its
Perth operations with flights from Adelaide and Melbourne, a new Cairns service, and international
services to Denpasar, Jakarta, and Singapore. In addition, Jet star entered the Auckland market in
April 2009 with daily services to Sydney and the Gold Coast. It replaced Qantas in the domestic
New Zealand market in June 2009, operating 84 services a week between Auckland, Christchurch,
Queenstown, and Wellington. Jet star also grew frequency on its Japan services and established
