This section discusses on how quality sugarbeet is grown in the field. High quality refers to high-sucrose level with low tare(impurities). Sugarbeet grows in moderately cold climates but can adapt itself in warmer climates as well. It is mainly grows in Europe countries from Turkey all the way to finland.
Sugarbeet need two years for a full life cycle. In the first year of growth, the root(containing sucrose) and leaves grow. In the second year the sugarbeet flowers and produces seed. Therefore sugarbeet is treated as annual. Seed planted in spring and sugarbeet is harvested in late fall or early winter. It weighs 0.5 to 2kg when fully grown. In advanced sugar-beet growing countries the average sugarbeet yield is 50 to 50t/ha while in irrigated areas in United States producing only 30 to 40t/ha (Asadi,2007).
Sugarbeet grows mainly on soil which is sandy, clay and peaty loam which is able to hold the water better. Soil preparation includes tillage, seed spacing, fertilizing and herbicide which is very crucial. In tillage, there will be a soil turn over which increases the respiration rate and water penetration. Consistent row spacing is important and it is typically between 36 to76cm. Herbicide which is a weed killer will be added before planting as to control the weeds and reduce soil erosion.
