Energy Drinks and Dr. Phil
“Energy Drinks and Dr. Phil”
Have you ever wondered if an episode of Dr. Phil could be like the following?
Radio Announcer: “The views of this radio station do not necessarily reflect the views of Dr. Phil, especially if you are a parent with your head up your ass. This station will not be held responsible for the damage done to a parent’s ego or liable for therapy needed after Dr. Phil insults you and makes you feel like shit. Therefore, listen and call in at your own risk.”
Radio Announcer: “I would like to introduce our listeners to a man that tells it like it is, Dr. Phil. Our phone lines are now open. We have a caller on hold, Dr. Phil, who would like to ask you a question.”
Dr. Phil: “I will be happy to take their call. Yes, caller what is your question?”
Caller: “My son has been tested for ADHD. He has seen a shrink, I mean a psychiatrist, and had many tests run on him, and no one can figure out why he is always climbing the walls or acts anxious and at times violent.”
Dr. Phil: “What does his diet consist of? Maybe he has food allergies.”
Caller: “We took him to an allergist and nothing. The only thing we give him are vitamins and energy drinks, since they are healthy because they have herbs and vitamins in them, so I know that couldn’t be it.”
Dr. Phil: “Are you kidding me? A 12-ounce serving of Red Bull drink has 116 milligrams of caffeine, compared with 34 to 38 milligrams for the same amount of a soda. Energy drinks may also include sugar, amino acids, vitamins, plant-based stimulants like guarana, and herbs like ginkgo and ginseng, but the main active ingredient is caffeine. That is why he is climbing the walls, Lady!”
Caller: “But Dr. Phil, we really didn’t think it was that big of a deal, besides every time we tried to take them away he would get abusive and violent, so it was easier to let him have them.”
Dr. Phil: “Did somebody stamped stupid on my forehead? You withheld information from his health care professionals because you didn’t want to deal with telling him “no”? Isn’t that right? It is much easier to let him continue on these so-called healthy drinks then to deal with the addiction. An addiction that is associated with “toxic jock” behavior, including unprotected sex, substance abuse and violence.”
Caller: “He is addicted to them? I just thought my son was being a spoiled brat and acting like his father.”
Dr. Phil: “Let me tell you something, this ain’t my first rodeo. I know a weak-willed parent when I see one. We are seeing more children having nausea, abnormal heart rhythms
