Rainsford Characterization
The protagonist, Sanger Rainsford, is an adventurous big-game hunter who confronts the nature of life and death for the first time in his life during his few frightening days on Ship-Trap Island. Rainsford calmly handles any challenge that is thrown at him throughout the story.He falls overboard in the middle of the night and has to swim several miles to reach the shore. He survives numerous near-death experiences.Until he is found by the antagonist General Zaroff where he believes he will be safely returned home until he realizes that he will be hunted.When he fights on the frontlines during World War I he learns a lot of what people are truly capable of. Also when he hunts dangerous animals in some of the world’s most exotic places. Rainsford’s wartime experiences has shown him that human are the most dangerous and smart thing on the earth. Only during Zaroff’s final pursuit of him does Rainsford truly feel fear and his own survival instinct kick in.
