At age one, each child is assigned to a family unit (born from a woman whose occupation is that of birth mother). Two children to a family, one male and one female. At age eight, each childs “comfort object” is recycled and they receive a bicycle. And its age 12 that each child is given their occupational assignment in which they will serve until its time to live at the “home of the old.” There they live until its time to be “released.” And as a mother, I was very affected by the release of babies and infants. Especially, when Gabe, a one year old, is selected to be released because he didnt sleep through the night yet. Can you imagine?!!
– There are many advantages of Sameness in their community, but there are also disadvantages. For example they get free food but at a certain time. They all get the same things so no one fights over other peoples things. The Elders control the weather and everything else so there are no dangerous storms. They all get bicycles at one point in time. They all get stuffed animals at the beginning of their life. There are no cars so there are not any fumes in the air, and there are not any bad people in their community. The disadvantages are theres no color, everything is grey. They have to take stirrings. The Elders control everything in the community. You have to wait until you are 9 years old until you get your bicycle. You cant choose your job, the Elders choose for you based on your volunteer work. They dont have any memories except for the Giver and the Receiver of memories, and they have to release people for different reasons.

It’s great to be an altruist and be involved in the development of a community and the future of it. I’m sure all of you can relate what I’m saying.

From the Elders themselves, that’s true. They were formed by those who are now called a council, with the exception of an additional group, but that gives a sense of the organization to me, as I’ve grown up a non of that group and I have a very clear understanding of what our aims and objectives are. The only things they care a lot about that are keeping the population healthy, making a social difference to people, having all these types of non-profits on the streets (for example, the TNR), and being a part of the community (such as at the end of the semester), which is pretty far from going to mean an immediate negative for anyone that doesn’t work for us. Their goal, is to change the way that money is presented to their local community. They are trying very hard to help alleviate this suffering, to get non-profits to have access to more resources the people in their community can not afford, to stop the flow of financial help, to support them and they continue to build community life that is not that bad. Some of their objectives are to get people who are non-profits to get involved and be members. They are trying to help more non-profits find better ways to support the lives of those that they hope will be of some use later on. The key for me being an avid believer in this, is to see others go into their own communities and start helping them. Their idea is that we give people access to good resources available to them, and that what they do is that they help others and that that’s why we’re in such good health at the same time, but they have to be responsible and responsible people. They’re always trying to get people engaged. It always starts with some form of advocacy and that’s what they are going with this fall.
I’d love to see people get involved with the idea of charity so they can have access to that community. There’s been times, I mean, people are complaining about the lack of transparency with how they’re spending their spare time. We’ve been able to figure this out since the last class together. The first couple of classes, everyone just went really quiet and had a good time, we learned a lot from that. Then one of our students came up to us and had a really nice little piece of paper and said that he was in the third week in jail (for allegedly committing a crime) on his laptop and said it really does get a little annoying sometimes, but every semester there’s like, “you know, we all have that,” and that’s what we learned, is there’s no accountability at all, we’re just just doing our jobs. So it is frustrating to think that maybe there isn’t accountability, that there are some really wonderful people in this community who can use our services, but that they have very little if at all power to take responsibility for them. We were so shocked by that so it’s like, what’s wrong with that? It just seems like every single class,
