Spanking
Ashley Patel
I am leaning to both sides on this subject. I think it depends on the age and the situation. Some of the research I found say that it is ok to spank. According to national surveys, over 90 percent of parents have spanked their children at least once during the past year. The majority of parents support the idea of spanking and believe that giving kids ” a good, hard spanking” is sometimes necessary. As many as 80 to 90 percent of the U.S. population reports that parents have not only the right, but the moral obligation to spank or slap their children. A recent national study of mothers showed that 3 to 5 year olds may be spanked by them as often as 150 times a year. Also, mothers spank more than fathers, and boys are spanked more often then girls. I believe that it is ok to spank your child, as long as you dont cause bruising or wounds. Also, as long as you dont down grade your child like verbally abusing them. You have to make it clear to them of why they are getting spanked. I have a 2 year old and I have spanked him before, and I felt terrible for doing it.I think 2 is a little too young to spank but it does happen.
On the other hand there are other alternatives to punishment. Some of them are; Demonstrate how you want your child to behave. For example, if your child is doing something wrong way, then correct them and show them the right way to do it. Another one is, communicate your own feelings. Let them know that you are not happy with picking up their toys everyday. Another is look for underlying feelings. Acknowledge, accept and listen to their feelings. If your child hits someone then let him know what he did was wrong, but it is ok to express your anger in other ways.
