Insulation
The aim of this experiment is to investigate the insulative properties of different materials by putting them around a beaker and seeing how they affect the heat loss .
I predict that the beaker with the foil will have the least amount of heat loss as it would reflect the heat back in , followed by the bubble wrap which creates a layer of air around the beaker and finally the control beaker with no insulation as there’s nothing keeping the heat in .
Procedure :
Apparatus Required : 3 200ml beakers
One digital thermometer
3 temperature probes
Bubble wrap
Aluminium foil
Boiling water
Elastic band
Timer
Method :
1 . Have a table drawn suitable for the experiment first
2 . Put one circulation of foil around one beaker and put an elastic band around it
3. Put on circulation of bubble wrap around one beaker and put an elastic band around it
4. Set digital thermometer up and organise the probes to know which one goes with which beaker
5. Pour boiling water in all 3 beakers and put temperature probes in all of them
6. Wait for the temperature to drop down to 75 degrees Celsius before starting the time .
Since in groups three get one person to be in control of one beaker
7. Once at 75 degrees Celsius , write down in your table the 0 min temperature and keep recording the temperature once every minute for ten minutes
8. Repeat steps 5 to 7 twice more to get your 2nd and 3rd trials
9. Calculate the average on your graph
At the beginning of the testing the temperature was going down by approximately 3 degrees Celsius each town . Then around the 3 minute mark the temperature loss slowed down to approximately 2 degrees Celsius . And finally around the 8 minute mark temperature reduced to approximately 1 degree Celsius .
I believe that is the pattern as for the foil between the 1 min and 2 min mark the temperature went from 71.5 degrees Celsius
