What a Nice World
There was a short period of my life when racism did not affect my thinking and actions toward a person. My thoughts were free of discriminating feelings and did not experience any racist acts; until second grade. From then on, I experienced my friends leaving harsh remarks about each others race, and many more that left me paralyzed, and almost scared. At first I tried to refrain, and tried to act impartial, but I could not. The majority of people around me was oppressing me into this cruel idea, and realized then the power of society mindset. A few years later, going through the new “rules” we made for each other, I realized that it was not just us that were acting racist. When I went on the Internet, I saw many advertisements and many videos leaving derogatory remarks about certain races. This exposed me to the “real” world of cruelty and the power of the society.

At first, when I was assigned this assignment, I was moaning and groaning, flipping through thin pages of newspaper, finding one in every 18 issues. I was tired and sick of it, until I said to myself, “If I have to do this anyways, why not enjoy it?” After that great epiphany, I started to read about 6 newspapers and magazines a day no matter how much homework I had or if I had a test, because I was so into it. I should not be proud to be interested in reading about other peoples suffering and their misfortune, but it gave me many ideas of what this world really is, and how it functions. I was completely clueless and oblivious of the copious amount of racism around the world. Before this project, my eye was opened to a certain angle to know what racism is and to know what happened in the past, but after this project, it opened my eyes to analyze the harsh racism still continuing in this world, and even infer what will happen in the future with racism. This project was one of the most remarkable and the most helpful English project.

For the creative project, I decided to rebuild a scene from “To Kill a Mocking Bird.” I had built another sculpture that represents the anger of blacks towards black, but it unfortunately collapsed, and had to move on. This scene was one of the most remarkable scenes in the book itself, for it was so deep and so meaningful to me. As I sat down with down feelings after noticing my ruined sculpture, the book was stick out and I decided to read the notes I had taken a year back. Then I saw the page. This scene I believe is my favorite part, is when Scout and Jem are building a snowman in a winter day, and how they make the inner body of the snowman out of mud for the lack of mud, and how they covered it back up with snow. This shows the symbolism
