An Evening with Maya Angelou at the Alhambra Institute
In the summer of 1995 Maya Angelou gave an evening speech to students of a college in California. Maya Angelou had just announced her commencement address at the Alhambra University in New York. An evening had been arranged for March 2013. On the morning of March 13, 2013 a group of four students marched to campus after a two hour walk through Alhambra’s campus. The group was told from outside that, “you’ve been invited. There is no way you could miss this address. It was prepared by a group of the students from the University of North Carolina, of course, that were there, and they’re a special class of students that have never before been invited to this event. So I was extremely surprised, I really can’t explain what an incredible honor it was to be invited. I am surprised and surprised to hear the President of the Alhambra Institute of American Studies, the Chancellor of the University of California, take that. But it is very much what it is — very, very different than most other organizations that have invited students to the event. It has been very different. I am extremely excited.”

Although Reagan was born in the 1960s, Reagan worked with the White House on a number of policy issues. In fact, she received two awards from the Reagan administration as a senior member of the Commission: Title II of the National Environmental Policy Act, which is an executive order created under President Reagan, and the Public Utilities Environmental Assessment, which is a National Review Act document. During 1991, Reagan worked on the Commission’s recommendations for the Federal Trade Commission, both national and state government review mechanisms, and also became the chair of the Commission’s National Advisory Committee on the Federal Communications Commission, which was tasked with meeting and working on a range of policy issues. Reagan was a co-founder and executive committee member of that Committee. In 1998 Reagan served as the Secretary-Treasurer from 1995 to 2006. She served more than 30 years as Secretary-Treasurer of the Department of Commerce and Executive Secretary of several Federal agencies. During that period Ronald Reagan served as Vice President Dick Cheney’s Assistant Secretary of State and director of the National Science Foundation, whose primary role was to help develop and disseminate scientific and technical information. Reagan was also chief of staff to then Vice President George Bush. Reagan served in the White House as undersecretary for education, secretary of defense, and assistant secretary of commerce. Dr. Angelou, who speaks French, Spanish, Italian and West African Fanti, began her career in drama and dance. She married a South African freedom fighter and lived in Cairo where she was editor of The Arab Observer, the only English-language news weekly in the Middle East. In Ghana, she was the feature editor of The African Review and taught at the University of Ghana. In the 1960s, at the request of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Ms. Angelou became the northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
