Research File 3D Computer ModellingWhat is 3d computer modelling ?In 3D computer graphics, 3D modelling is the process of developing a mathematical representation of any three-dimensional surface of an object using a specialized software. The product is called a 3D model. It can be displayed as a two-dimensional image through a process called 3D rendering or used in a computer simulation. The model can also be physically created using 3D printing devices.Models may be created automatically or manually. The manual modelling process of preparing geometric data for 3D computer graphics is similar to plastic arts such as sculpting using modelling applications.6 Industries that Use 3D Modeling Software1. EntertainmentOne of the most obvious places you can see the use of 3D modelling growing is in the entertainment field. There’s not a big film that comes out of Hollywood without extensive use of 3D modelling. It’s clearly useful in special effects, not only creating environments that never existed before and supernatural effects but also shots where things are added that you might not even realize that they are artificial. 2. GamingAnother area where 3D modelling software is evident is in the area of gaming. Video games are becoming more and more realistic. There are also an increasing number of universities that offer courses in 3D modelling for video gaming.3. ArchitectureFor decades, Architects would create plans and blueprints into a drawing, usually somewhat realistic, that was essentially the first “picture” of the new building. Nowadays these renderings are done on computers and you can add motion and depth so that clients can get a close approach that illustrates all angles of vision (including a birds-eye or ground perspective view). Additionally, the views can go inside the structure too. This way the clients know exactly what they’re in for on their project.4. PublishingPublishers of textbooks and other illustrated books are making use of 3D modelling more and more. It allows them to show pictures that otherwise they might not be able to get for various reasons including access and copyright issues. Sometimes the illustrations may be fantastical and they can help show an artist’s version of something that mankind has never seen like historic events or visions of the future.5. Advertising and Marketing3D modelling artists can help advertisers and marketers to depict their products in the ideal state. It allows companies to render new cars, new product packaging and prototypes at low costs. If it doesn’t work, they can fix it by simply changing the computer model. One advantage that comes along is that once they have developed the right rendering, they can use that to sell the item before they have to invest capital in production.6. Geology and ScienceGeologists and scientists can use 3D modeling to create models that simulate earthquakes and landforms such as ocean trenches that let them see the affects of stresses. Additionally, they can simulate motion like flight patterns and including various factors that affect them.
One Disadvantage of Computer ModellingThree-dimensional (3D) information plays an important part in medical and veterinary education. This study developed and evaluated the use of a physical model in demonstrating the complex spatial relationships of the foot compared to a 3D computer model . It was hypothesized that the newly developed physical model would be more effective for students to learn magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) anatomy of the foot than textbooks or computer-based 3D models. Third year veterinary medicine students were randomly assigned to one of three teaching aid groups (physical model; textbooks; 3D computer model). The comparative effectiveness of the three teaching aids were assessed through the students abilities to identify anatomical structures on MR images. Overall mean MRI assessment scores were significantly higher in students utilizing the physical model (86.39%) compared with students using textbooks (62.61%) and the 3D computer model (63.68%). Student feedback was also more positive in the physical model group compared with both the textbook and 3D computer model groups. Our results suggest that physical models may hold a significant advantage over alternative learning resources in enhancing visuospatial and 3D understanding of complex anatomical architecture and that 3D computer models have significant limitations with regards to 3D learning.Machine specificationsTechnical requirements and software requirements.Technical Requirements :CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor ( Rs 13 600 )CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 CPU Cooler (Rs 2 660) Motherboard: MSI X99S SLI Plus ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard (Rs 9 500) Memory: Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory (Rs 8000) Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 120GB 2.5″ Solid State Drive ( Rs 4 500) Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 3TB 3.5″ 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (Rs 5 705) Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 4GB WINDFORCE 3X Video Card (Rs 19 250)Case: NZXT Phantom 820 ATX Full Tower Case (Rs 7 665) Power Supply: Rosewill 1000W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (Rs 5 000) Total: Rs 75 880 (MRU) Mauritian RupeesSoftware Requirements :Microsoft Windows 10Adobe IllustratorAdobe PhotoshopAutoCADAutodesk MayaCompression for image output:Image compression is minimizing the size in bytes of a graphics file without degrading the quality of the image to an unacceptable level. The reduction in file size allows more images to be stored in a given amount of disk or memory space. It also reduces the time required for images to be sent over the Internet or downloaded from Web pages.
