A Introduction
Lab 8 : Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic acid)
Our goal for this lab is to dive dep into what analgesics are and how theyre made. Asprin is an analgesic and it does have some side effects. It an cause gastric problems. Buffering does not reduce the effect of acid. It can cause “Reyes Syndrome”, brain disorder for some persons who are under 18 years of age, and also effects blood platelets and causes a blood clotting problem.
A few techniques that well be utilizing for this experiment are phenol testing, vacuum filtration, recrystallization, and melting point which provides analytical purity data about our sample. We will also be measuring the volume and weight and using different heating and cooling methods.
A compound well be using is the phenol, or aromatic alcohol and how it reacts with teh anhydride to form an ester. We will also use an acid catalyst H2SO4 and note on the purpose of the enzyme.
B. Results and discussion:
1. This reaction is an acid catalyzed acetylation reaction. H2SO4 is the acid catalyst.
