Rock music is defiantly not the same as it used to be. Rock music has changed a great deal from the sixties until now. Each decade had a different spin on rock music. You have Elvis in the sixties, which he is the king of rock. In the seventies there is a lot of bands such as The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimmi Hendrix, etc. Even the eighties werent too shabby, if you ask me. Todays rock is nothing like decades from the past.
Look at the decade we are in right now. What major bands come to your mind? I mean give me a break. Rock is declining at a rapid pace and it is really disappointing. Dont get me wrong,I love rock and roll music but one thing I dont like is the crappy bands of todays music. Seriously, when you consider how rock was in the in the past and then look at todays songs, you would defiantly agree with me. One thing that bothers me about todays rock is that most bands just copy each other. I realize that new styles have formed throughout the years, but why do bands all try to imitate each other. Look at Creed, who is Creed? Ill tell you who they are; they are a want to be Pearl Jam group. Pearl Jam is a very successful band and they started the new alternative sound in a sense. Its pathetic to see bands mimic others. The bands that really piss me off these days are Good Charlotte and all those type bands. One day I was watching MTV and a Good Charlotte video was on and the head singer was dancing like he was in a rap video. Does this sound like rock to you? What happened to the head banging while playing the guitar? There are bands in todays society that are keeping it real. All Im saying is rock music is still not like it used to be. Its hard to even compare rock music from the sixties till present day. Old rock speaks for itself in general, but it is easier to look at more recent years and see how rock took a plunge. Nirvana was huge in the nineties, and Kurt just flat out killed himself. There goes Nirvana, the new grunge-rock era. But all these bands thought they could be the next Nirvana but it just got worse. There is a few other bands that are around that are respectable for rock music. But not in large numbers, thats for sure. My statement about how rock isnt the same, is not just an opinion, its a fact. Look at the statistics of people buying CDs of rock music from present day to back in the day. The results are overwhelming.
My main theory why rock music declined is actually simple. Its one word, “rap”. Hip-hop music and rap has taken over todays society. I bet you seven out of ten cars you pass on the highway are listening to hip-hop or rap. Im not talking about older adults, I am talking about my generation. In the old days, everyone listened to rock and roll. It didnt matter what sex you were or how old you were. Take the MTV countdown for example. Watch TRL and see how many rock songs appear on the countdown. The results will prove my statement how rock is not near as popular. People might say whom cares if MTV doesnt show rock music, it doesnt mean rock has taken a plunge. Well maybe those people are slightly correct if they are talking about their own personal opinion. But one thing that makes music flourish is the media. If rock isnt even on music stations, on regular cable, then there is a problem. Alright, take Pepsi commercials or Coke commercials for example. This summer I saw many commercials where they had people just rap about drinking Pepsi. There is a commercial with LL Cool J and Run DMC that is advertised constantly on commercials.
