Sociology is the study of the origin, development, and structure of human societies and the behavior of individual people and groups in society. There are many interesting concepts I have learned from SOC 101 this semester and many of the things I thought I knew about society have changed. “The sociology of emotion,” “Role Strain and Role Conflict in Families Today,” and “disability and social inequality” are some of the major concepts I have learned this semester. My ideas, values, and views have changed since I have taken SOC 101.
“The Sociology of Emotion” is a concept that explains why we express the emotions we do and when. Due to Arlie Hochschild work society has learned that people acquire feeling rules that shapes the appropriate emotions for a given role or situation. Before this class I didnt realize that certain jobs required people to use certain emotions. If a flight attendants job requires them to the open and friendly with the passengers in order to make their experience more pleasant. This is an interesting concept and leads me to believe that we are forced to express certain emotions at certain times because society demands us too. Another example of this would be a mortician; they are required to show sadness and morn to correlate with their customers. Our everyday social interactions and situations are shaped by our emotions and “emotion Rules.” Its interesting to think that without societys play on our emotions we would live our everyday lives a lot different. The media, our peers, and occupations can all shape our emotions in a way thats deemed appropriate. “The Sociology of Emotions” is a concept that explains why people feel the way they do because their surroundings shape them.
Another important concept that taught this semester in Sociology was “Role Strain and Role Conflict in Families Today.” Role conflict occurs when unsuited demands are placed on an individual by two or more statuses held at the same time. Role conflict is most common between work and family; this is because there are many responsibilities demanded by todays society. Economical and physiological support for members can sometimes be hard to keep up with. I found it interesting that family problems are related to cyberspace and consumerism related to the haves and have nots of society. Role strain in families occurs when incompatible demands are built into a single status that a person holds. This can be seen in factory jobs. Women are dominated at home the same way the workers are controlled. Due to the role strain many conflicts can develop within the home and the work force. These concepts have taught me many things about the world. There are many strains that can cause tension within a family that can lead to divorce and marital conflicts. Not only do these strains effect the parents but also the children. This class
