The roman catholic church is under spiritual leadership of the Pope. The traditional Roman Catholic view is often expressed in the Latin phrase “Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus” or Outside the church there is no salvation. Roman Catholics in Brazil are very passionate about religion. During the 19th century, Catholicism was made the official religion of brazil after European settelers introduced catholicism to local natives. In 1850 catholic priest Pedro Maria Boss suggested building a large religious monument was built in Rio de Janeiro to symbolize Brazilian Catholicism. The monument is a 130 ft stature of Christo Redentor (Christ the redeemer) and was finally built in 1921 by the catholic circle of rio. Brazil is full of popular festivities rooted in centuries-old Portuguese religious traditions, but also heavily influenced by African and Native Brazilian religious traditions as well. Popular traditions include visits to the National Shrine of our lady Aparecida.(Nossa Senhora Aparecida), the patroness of Brazil.

brazil has various different music styles inspired by African, european, and Amerindian cultures. Brazilian music has many different styles and genres such as samba, lambada, funk carioca, and brega as well as many others. Samba is a musical genre as well as dance, and has become one of the best known forms of brazilian music worldwide. Samba originates at the beginning of the 20th century popularized by immigrants from bahia. Samba is a very distinctive genre, it is very catchy and lively.

The history of Brazilian samba has developed into many types and forms – from the fast-paced drum orchestras played during carnivals and street parades to the more gentle and slow samba-cancao. One of the newer styles of samba that emerged in Rio is bossa nova. This new style of music gained an identity of its own over time and is now very popular in modern day brazil. Two of the most famous bossa nova musicians in the country were Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto.

DANCE
Brazil is very famous for its dancing history. The most popular dance in brazilian culture is the samba. Along with samba music, samba is a lively original dancing style originated 1917 where it was publicly introduced. It became more and more popular by the 1920s and its popularity grew immensely from there. Samba is usually performs by couples, the first step performed by a woman and involves fast paced steps and complex patterns.

There are many other types of dance in brazil including capoeira,and cambiro both important dances with an afro-brazilian like feel to it.
Brazilian art began in the 16th century, but the oldest known art in brazil is the cave paintings in Sierra Capivara. These paintings can date back all the way to 13,000 bc.
