I interviewed Ms. Ford for this assignment. Ms. Ford is a 6th grade English teacher at Rose Hill Middle School. She teaches four classes of 6th grade English a day. She is responsible for teaching the basic objectives that 6th grader should know be advancing the 7th grade level. She was the English teacher and girls Basketball coach at West Middle school for 3 years, and later she moved to Rose Hill Middle were she’s been teaching for 4 years. She has been teaching for a total of 7years. She began teaching at Rose Hill after a storm destroyed Jackson Middle School in the city; Rose Hill was built in the place of it.
One of her most difficult task were being confronted by and older teacher about her teaching style. She was one of the only Black English teachers at the school and they felt one of her teaching styles was sometimes not appropriate. She believes education is very important, that’s why she chose teaching as a profession.
Her personal income is about 35,000 a year. She had to take on a part-time at JcPenny’s to help pay other household needs, she is also raising two boys one in middle school and the other is in elementary.
When she was going up her mother was very strict, “She didn’t put up with mess” she tells me. Ms. Ford really didn’t have a choice after she graduated from high school, it was either work and move out or go to school and she chose school. She attended Tennessee State University. She admits to getting off track a couple of times, but she says her younger brother was always there to push her to do her best.
She says that is was not about the money she just loved teaching. She also believes that relationships should be 50/50. She says “relationships are what you put in them” you should be with someone who makes you happy. The advice she gave me was “Don’t let money chose your
