Under Water
Thesis- “I might the avoid many things: harsh words, foolish decisions, moments of inattention, regret that wash over me, like water.”
Support:
“The current was so strong, and we were so incompetent, that we never got close”
“When I was eighteen, I wanted to hurry through life as fast as I could.”
“There are six difficulties, and Class II was not an unreasonable challenge for novice paddlers.”
Establishing a Focus:
From the beginning Anne Fadiman builds suspense all the way until, she establishes the focus of the essay. Fadiman starts off from the start talking about the kid’s story, and decided to put the thesis at the end of the essay. This technique of putting the thesis gives the reader a chance to think of the thesis in their heads and presents a clearer thesis when the author states what it is she has decided her thesis to be. The whole essay builds up to the point at the beginning where the thesis is stated.
The Lost Boys
Thesis:
“It’s a hard Life here, but it’s a free life, too.”
Support:
“In the meantime, the temperature in Fargo has dropped to 15 Below Zero”
“Some 17,000 boys were separated from their families.”
“The boys endured attacks from the northern army, marauding bandits, and lions too.”
“Many died from starvation, thirst, and many were killed by crocs trying to cross the swollen Ethiopian river.”
“By the time that the boys had reached the Kakuma Refugee Camp, their numbers were cut in half.”
“The boys say they will receive about $107 in food stamps, and spend the monthly $510 on monthly costs and rent.”
Establishing a focus:
Sara Corbett begins telling the readers about the rough life that these boys have had so far. In a way she paints a picture in our head about the way these boys have lived their life. The picture I got was that it has been a hard life. Also she stresses that it is very difficult for these boys to live on their own, and it is going to take some time to learn how to live on their own. She also makes the point that just because they are in the USA their struggle’s are not over, but it would be a better life here, then what it would be for them at home.
Apple Essay
I remember it like it was yesterday, it was a cold autumn night and I heard a knock on my door. When I answered the door much to my surprise was the News Channel 4 news crew presenting me with my golden apple award for my outstanding achievements in the apple pie contest at the local fair. This was a dream of mine that I have had since I was a little blossom upon an apple tree. When it came true it reminded me of the old saying every dog has its day.
This season wasn’t looking too promising for the apple dumplings. The apple dumplings are a team I started five years ago and we finally got a bid to be in the BPC (Best pie Circuit). After losing
three apples to injury and having another one sick we were down four players entering the draft. So I decided to take Paul Crisp first round. Last year Crisp missed out of the draft because of a bad drought season, in the New England Region.
Since I went with a rookie who took his last season off I had to have a strong second pick. When the other teams picked over Andrew Juice from the Courtland Apples, I Knew I had to pick him. Juice had decent, but productive year in 2005-2006 he was invited to join the all conference apples, but turned it down because he and his wife were celebrating the expected arrival of his newest blossom.
Objective
My mother always told me t listen t my conscience. Last January, this advice that she gave me my whole entire life, paid off. On a night in January, my friends and I decided to go sled riding. We went to an old street that had a big hill that they closed in the winter. Two of my friends have trucks and we decided to sled down the hill, and they would pull us up. At the bottom we were supposed
