Korean Japanese Hong Kong Movie ComparisonI was first introduced to the Korean film industry through their comedy movies. In fact, I had already watched the original My Sassy Girl and its Hollywood remake a few years back. Although the two films followed the same storyline, it was clear that the Hollywood version was meant to appeal to an American audience because of its focus on the development of the storyline. This would explain why it did not include all the scenes from the Korean version and even modified some. On the other hand, the original film focused more on the characters emotions. This can be seen in the details of the film, such as the close-ups of Gyeon-woos expressive face. This element can also be seen in the directors (Kwak Jae-yongs) other film, The Classic, when it would focus on the Joo-hees (the mothers) crying over the death of her lover and Ji-hyes (the daughter) joyful run through the rain when she found out that the boy she liked reciprocated her feelings. Although Western audiences may find this emphasis on emotions dragging, it is one of the characteristics that make My Sassy Girl and The Classic distinctly Korean films.
Another characteristic that distinguishes My Sassy Girl and The Classic as distinctly Korean is the personality of the female protagonists in both movies. Most girls in Asian films are portrayed to be meek and elegant like Japans kawaii girls or the Philippines Maria Clara. However, Korean films are not afraid of portraying their female protagonists as aggressive, outspoken, and tough natured. Both the girl of My Sassy Girl, and Joo-hee and Ji-hye of The Classic display a toughness that is uncommon in most Asian cultures. My Sassy Girls protagonists open criticism of the people around her may come off as too aggressive and even boyish to Koreas neighboring cultures. On the other hand, the openness of Joo-hee, Soo-Kyeong, and, eventually, Ji-hye about their feelings for
Jin-hee, The Classic’s Kim and Ji-hye, is not only a strong and capable actress, but also an unforgettable character. Her style and humor is infectious, a joy to watch, especially when it comes to her voice acting. She has the unique ability to voice a whole lot of emotional dialogue, often with tears for the viewers. She has her own unique style that can appeal to different demographics, ranging from the haughty high school to the adult woman. In this case, My Sassy Sassy Girls characters are highly popular (in America, only 8 per cent of the general population watches TV) and have a strong fan following to help them develop.

The short movie “Yoona” is probably the most popular short of the series. It focuses on a young woman who happens towards a man, who sees him trying to stop him from killing her child. The scene is shown in Japanese and I believe the subtitles (Japanese) were changed before the film started being seen in Asia. However, it has made a lasting impression on viewers, who found the title quite catchy. It is also used as the opening theme song throughout the series. Most of the time, people like the scenes where the child is held or the story (like to see a child do something when she’s holding a knife) will be included.
The main heroine, Min-hyeok (Korean, so she is called upon as the “Yoona”), is introduced to the rest of the group with all the characters talking. Her eyes are wide with her cute white face and her cheeks are pink or red. She is accompanied by other girls as she keeps to herself and works to save one’s own life. My Sassy Girl girls also have a very large and cute puppy as they also carry the same “Yoona” dog that my protagonist’s dog is known from the movie. The dog is very curious about her, and can get mad when she knows her name and then will ask when she is about to cry and sometimes can even bark at the kids to get away.[1]
The puppy is also capable of making a big mistake as it can make it to different places. It’s a small dog however, which is similar to a duck. She also is a very strong animal, one able to withstand pressure, and can attack any type of person without fear, especially children and people.
