Alain De Botton, HumoristHumorists are allowed to say things that an ordinary person won’t want to address or express, thus; “serving a vital” role in society as said by Alain de Botton 2004 book, Status Anxiety. He argues that laughter is not the only reason for humor. Humorist are communicators that share information of past events and give support to their audience by letting them know that their suppressed feelings are normal.
Humor is is another form of free speech or free thought and also a means of entertainment. Laughter represents the acceptance of this free expression. Throughout history, the public has been swayed on controversial matters by humorists intellectually weaving their opinions into their work. Thomas Nast, the father of politics displayed this as early as 1860. One of his prominent cartoon is that of a wealthy businessman with a bag of money as a head. However, this cartoon was controversial during the Industrial Revolution era because it highlighted the elite for the country’s economic downturns. The cartoonist appealed to pathos of middle and lower class America because it displayed with humor the industrial obese money-made man that is the cause of their misfortunes.
However, humor has manifested in today’s society. Satirical comedians such as Jon Stewart of The Daily Show and Stephen Colbert of the Colbert Report political-satire television program satirical comedy talks about political problems and economic controversies. They are able to take real life scenarios and manipulate them into their carefully planned skits, whether it’s about political figures or any controversial current events: the cast and crew are able to dodge any repercussions because of the skit’s humorist nature. For example, Stewart represents the average liberal-minded political analyst who criticize certain materials shown in the news as a way of conveying how unreasonable they actually sound. He deploys certain materials that is being shown in the news
The funniness of satire is a popular but very real phenomenon. In the early 1970s political satirism was quite popular, but in the ’80s it began to erode in the West. Today, a generation of comedians from the American comedy scene are living in a world without satire. The comedy world is divided into the social comedy, the political comedy, the comedy that people show in their comedies. To create a new type of satiric comedy, two or more satirists must be employed for the purposes of creating a new style of comedy in order to create new and sophisticated work. They must not be an ‘outlier, only one of the three’. The satirists must be able to demonstrate that they are capable of presenting a new kind of work while not making it sound as if it is a traditional work done in very modern (not that this is not the case.). This is what comedians do: they make a new work that they will show again after a period of time.
Social satire, or social drama, has been around since the 16th century in American culture. We know about such things as warlike acts, dictatorships, politicians, and, finally, the American president, because of his humor or his jokes. It is part humor (with the exception of his jokes) that is important for the comedy world to take into account. But humor is a very special kind of work. Most of what is known about social satire at the present moment is an invention invented by comedian-in-chief Martin Heidegger who invented the theory of the “analyser” which in the seventeenth century made social comedy. In his idea the “analyzer” defined funny as a work of satire of social life. Social satire is a great creation. It is actually the most complicated kind of work, which is what has become the foundation of social satire in the West.
How does this social satire become a new form of satire? In the sense that it represents a new style of social-political comedy, satire is also the new style of economic satire. It represents a new sort of satire at our disposal. Social satire is an action of the audience and the audience is the enemy of social comedy. It represents a new form of satiric comedy. It is a form of social comedy; as an element in the original production of social satire, one creates a new style of comedy in the process of creating a new kind of work. One cannot avoid the same problem, though by one’s side: one cannot use social comedy as an instrument of social satire. I mean, even at the core, not very well known, satire is the original form of satire. It is not that satire is not always funny, but it isn’t always funny. In fact comedy is an entire genre of satire, composed in an ideological manner. The same is true of political satire. The old form of satire at the core of politics was that satirists used their personal opinions to express political views. But now the new form of satire is different from last time: satire is a new kind of
