Many people hope to have a job that allows them to do some activities after work and have a life outside the company. They tend to disapprove jobs that include the characteristics of long hours of working and travelling which often disable them to spend time with their families. On the contrary, despite the high compensation that can’t satisfy lot of employees due to the extreme nature of these jobs, there are certain individuals who find these jobs attractive and view them and their constraints as challenges. They prefer such jobs because they are amiable to the work type and are apt to be workaholics or career oriented. Also, the features of the jobs make life interesting and challenging for the individuals which in turn instill motivation in them. Paolo, Irene, Tony, and David show that they are motivated and satisfied despite the conditions imposed by their work. This satisfaction justifies their implication in the organization and also that they accept the conditions as a positive challenge. It is motivation and satisfaction that permits to work despite work stress and time constraints.
What characteristics of these jobs might contribute to increase level of job satisfaction?Answer:Higher job satisfaction increases productivity, performance quality, organizational effectiveness and retention whereas it reduces negative behaviors, such as, tardiness, absenteeism and turnover. However, strong organizational support and employee engagement play a vital role in building job satisfaction. Jobs that offer training, variety, interdependence, control, a strong position, security as well an impressive payment satisfy most workers. Again, a positive work environment that includes supportive managers and friendly co-workers largely contributes to increased level of job satisfaction. There is a strong correspondence between how people enjoy the social context of their workplace and how satisfied they are overall. Interdependence, feedback, social support and interaction with co-workers outside the workplace are strongly related. Moreover, these types of jobs are more likely to create challenges which consequently develop interest within certain individuals and influence them to persevere. Finally, when the individuals succeed in overcoming the challenge, they experience an increase in their level of job satisfaction as well as motivation.Given that the four individuals we just read about tend to be satisfied with their jobs, how might this satisfaction relate to their job performance, citizenship behavior, and turnover?Answers:There exists a strong relationship between an employee’s job satisfaction with all the three elements, namely, his or her job performance, citizenship behavior, turnover and the four individuals mentioned in the passage are also no different in regard of job satisfaction. Given that they are satisfied with their respective jobs, they will most likely try to procure everything they need in order to ensure that they provide adequate output, that is, their job satisfaction acts as an incentive to enhance and improve their job performance. Meanwhile, their enthusiasm for the job alongside their satisfaction will tend to engage them citizenship behavior by performing more than their usual job duties. Thus each of the four individuals will try to provide performance beyond expectations. Additionally, they may take initiatives to assist others on their respective teams, volunteer for extra work, avoid unnecessary conflicts, respect the spirit as well as the organizational rules and regulations and gracefully tolerate occasional work related impositions and nuisances. Again, job satisfaction will keep Paolo, Irene, Tony and David from quitting their respective jobs. Meanwhile, content with job performance and citizenship behavior of each of the four individuals, their respective companies will also avoid dismissing anyone of them which in turn also reduces turnover.
