Satoshi Tajiri was just an ordinary 15-year old Japanese boy when he started to study electronics. He grew up in an unindustrialized part of Machida, Japan. Being raised in a rural area, his hobbies were peculiar to the majority and that this style of living eventually gave him difficulties with social interaction and nonverbal communication or what we know today as Asperger’s Syndrome. In his middle school days, he was labeled “Mr. Bug” for he loved to collect bugs. In line with him growing up is the conversion of Machida from a rural area to an urban area where he would soon discover the wonders of machines. He discovered and got addicted to a bug-centric game with the title of Space Invaders and because of this addiction he was near to not being able to graduate. Eventually, Tajiri graduated high school and took a two-year course to deeply study electronics and programming. He never lost his gaming addiction so at the age of 17, he started a writing a magazine called Game Freak. The focus of the publication was all about tips for games and everything about games. Through the magazine, he met Ken Sugimori, the future artist of what would soon be his greatest work – Pokemon. After a year of Game Freak publishing, they abandoned it and started a game-developing team of two using the same name. In 1990, Satoshi Tajiri had already planned Pokemon to be released in one of the first generation portable gaming console which is the Gameboy. In the 90’s, Nintendo, which was already a big company then, noticed Game Freak’s interesting idea and successfully established a partnership with them. Creatures, Inc. also joined the partnership because the production of Pokemon needed more funding (Battjes).
