Essay title: Drugs in Society
Today’s world can be very tough for students of all ages. Our country is at war with many enemies for many reasons. This can produce many problems for students and they may turn to school counselor’s, teachers, and other school faculty for help. It is a difficult responsibility for them but needs to be dealt with correctly.
There are many different ways that students can be affected by terrorism. Terrorism can have a direct effect on them when someone they know has been hurt or killed by terrorists. An example of this would be the World Trade Center bombings. There was a high number of deaths, especially parents, in the attack. That would leave a large number of students in our area directly affected by terrorism.
Students can also be affected indirectly by terrorism. The definition of terrorism is “the calculated use of violence ( or threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature; this is done through intimidation or coercion or instilling fear.” The main goal of terrorists is to scare the American people, make them feel unsafe and scared. Students may feel scared that something will happen to them or people they love.
Many students have family members who work in areas that could be targets of terrorists, like large cities. They may also have family members who are overseas or family members that travel a good amount. Students may worry that something may happen to them. This can cause them to not focus on what they should be like school, activities, or even just having fun.
School counselors, teachers, and other school faculty, play a huge role in helping out students affected by terrorism. They must set an example and give advice to students that help them deal with terrorism in our world. There are many ways that these people can help these students cope with these problems.
School faculty members must be prepared and have plans for dealing with situations like terrorism. Counselors should be well informed on the details concerning an issue so that they can have answers for students who come to them. They should also be able to explain to students that they need to trust the people in charge of keeping us safe. Explain that the government, emergency workers, police, fireman, doctors, and the military are helping people who are hurt and are working to ensure that no further tragedies occur. Teachers can be prepared by not giving tests or quizzes to students, this will only give them more unneeded stress. However, it is important to stay within the structure of the classroom.
Teachers can also provide activities in the classroom to help all students cope with terrorism. Classroom discussions can help the students to talk about the situation and answer their questions. Writing assignment can also help the students to talk about their feelings. However, the teacher must make sure that no students in the class was not directly affected by terrorism before using an activity like this.
Counselors must walk a fine line when dealing with terrorism. They have to find a balance where the student feels completely safe yet they understand that these people and problems exist. The most important point though is to make the students feel that they are safe, because they are. It is highly unlikely that a person in our country will be killed or injured by terrorism. There are a lot of statitistics and facts that can help to prove this. However, there is still a chance that it can happen, so a counselor or teacher has to do whatever he or she can to reassure the student that they are safe, especially at school.
We must also set a good example for the students. With children, their reactions are greatly influenced by adults emotions. So as counselors
