CLASSIFICATION AND DIVERSITY OF LIFE
OBJECTIVES: After completing this unit, the student should be able to:
I. SYSTEMATICS: SEEKING ORDER AMIDST DIVERSITY (Chapter 18)
State the two taxon levels that form the scientific name of an organism and explain the importance of identifying an organism by its scientific name.
List the eight major categories, or taxonomic ranks, in order from domain to species.
Name the three domains of life.
Diagram a tree of life and explain the relationship between the domains and kingdoms.
Name the four kingdoms in the domain Eukarya and give examples of organisms in each kingdom.
Define biodiversity and state the named biodiversity and estimated biodiversity.
Explain the connection between deforestation and species loss.
II. THE DIVERSITY OF PROKARYOTES AND VIRUSES (Chapter 19)
Define prokaryote.
