The Scottish short story “Sugar Baby” is written by Fiona Gibson and were first appeared in Scotland into the new era, by Canongate Books.
Canongate Books which has chosen to publish this short story; is a Scottish independent publishing firm based in Edinburgh, who got its name from an area of the city.
Their reason for publishing exactly this story might be because of its location. The short story takes place in “the Old Town” a part of Edinburgh – the capital of Scotland. In the way that they use a story; where a family from the capital and their conflict is described, I think they start people realizing how huge a problem this really is. People should think about what to give a child, just like Joe – because in Scotland live some of worlds heaviest.
The language is very relaxed, and we wont get an impression that says; that they are yelling at each other when they are discussing. In the way they are speaking almost calmly during the story, and considering that they live in the capital, have money for going out like a date – where they are enjoying themselves. I conclude that the family is from the middle- or upper class.
The text includes some direct speech. Direct speech is by saying exactly what someone has said. It is quoted speech that is presented without modification – In that way it makes the story alive.
The text varies between long and short sentences. By doing that, the author creates an enjoyable reading, and makes sure her writing isnt hard to read.
