Smokers should not smoke anywhere there are non-smokers
Am I wrong for wanting to live a longer life? Am I wrong for being against second hand smoke because of the effects it could have on my health? Well if your answer is no to all of the questions above then it is safe to say that we both agree that, Smokers should not smoke anywhere there are non smokers.
In this argumentative essay, I would present both sides of the topic of smoking around non-smokers and its harmful effects.
Tobacco is an agricultural product processed from the leaves of plants in the genus Nicotiana. It can be consumed, used as an organic pesticide and, in the form of nicotine tartrate, it is used in some medicines it is most commonly used as a recreational drug, and is a valuable cash crop for countries such as Cuba, China and United States. Nicotine is a colorless, oily, water-soluble, highly toxic, liquid alkaloid, C 1 0 H 1 4 N 2, found in tobacco and valued as an insecticide.
A lot of people are confused about what are the actual ingredients in a cigarette. Most believe that a cigarette is just made up of tobacco, but cigarettes contain more harmful ingredients than we know. “Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals. More than 60 are known to cause Cancer” (New York Smokers Quit line)
(“Ingredients in a,” 2008)
Here are some of the chemical ingredients that are in a cigarette that most people are no aware of:
Ammonia: Household cleaner.
Arsenic: Used in rat poisons.
Benzene: Used in making dyes, synthetic rubber.
Butane: Gas; used in lighter fluid.
Carbon monoxide: Poisonous gas.
Cadmium: Used in batteries.
Cyanide: Lethal poison.
DDT: A banned insecticide.
Ethyl Furoate: Causes liver damage in animals.
Lead: Poisonous in high doses.
Formaldehyde: Used to preserve dead specimens.
Methoprene: Insecticide to kill insects.
Maltitol: Sweetener for diabetics.
Napthalene: Ingredient in mothballs.
Methyl isocyanate: Its accidental release killed 2000 people in Bhopal, India, in 1984.
Polonium: Cancer-causing radioactive element.
There are many reasons why I believe that smokers should not smoke in public places or around non-smokers. The three reasons that stand out to me the most are: it is harmful to non-smokers, contribution to air pollution and the other possible options for smokers to have nicotine or to enjoy smoking without harming anyone in their surroundings.
Second hand smoke is a widely used term when it comes to smoking. Second hand smoke is also known as (ETS) which is environmental tobacco smoke or passive smoking. The reason why second smoke is a problem is because; it is classified as a known human carcinogen which is a cancer causing agent. Non-Smokers who live with people who do smoke are more likely to get sick or even die from illnesses such as heart disease or cancer. In the effects of second hand smoking article, the article states, “Passive smoking is especially risky for children and babies and can cause low birth weight babies, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), bronchitis, pneumonia, and middle ear infections.”
(Effects of second hand smoke)
There are about 3,400 lung cancer deaths in non-smoking adults due to second hand smoke. “219,440 Americans contract lung cancer every year.” (New York Smokers Quit line)
The same article also states that, “In 1992, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a review of the evidence available from epidemiological and other studies regarding the relationship between second hand smoke and heart disease and estimated that passive smoking was responsible for 35,000 to 40,000 deaths per year in the United States in the early 1980s” (Effects of second hand smoke)
Around the United States polluted air and other environment-related hazards kill many children under the age of 5 years old every year. Tobacco smoke produces fine particulate matter, which is the most dangerous element of air pollution for heath. Which means there is a strong chances that every time you see someone smoking
