The speaker starts his speech, creating ethos by making allusion to Dr.King, who is an authority figure. He then build pathos as he mentions about the human life. In the second paragraph, he emphasizes the definition of nonviolence, using anaphora, which is repetition of certain phrases in successive clauses.
Furthermore, in the fourth paragraph, he uses constantly “we” to create unity among the audience, and he attempts to get his message across more effectively. He also alludes to Ghandi, who established non-violence movement successfully and acquired renown from the people. This allusion creates ethos of the speaker and causes the audience to believe that the speaker is making argument based on the renowned figures such as Martin Luther King and Ghandi.
Throughout the essay, he highlights the sense of unity among audience using “we”, and he makes many analogies to understand his message to the audience more easily. For instance, he states “victory with strings attached”. This means that victory that is achieved through violence would be futile as it would be bring satisfaction, but pain to the people who had used violence as a mean of establishing their success.
Lastly, he uses rhetorical questions when he asks the audience who gets killed in the case of revolution? This part also consists of logos, because the speaker is critically reasoning the logic that victims of the revolution would only be the minorities such as poor and the workers, and thus underscores his point that the revolution would be meaningless.
Overall, the essay is comprised of strong dictions, creating a determinate, forceful atmosphere. This appeals to audience’s emotion as it arouses the people to advocate for nonviolence resistance. He also juxtaposes when comparing extreme opposite situations.
