Not Waving But DrowningEssay Preview: Not Waving But DrowningReport this essay“Not Waving But Drowning”When a person first read the poem “Not Waving But Drowning” by Stevie Smith they might think that it is just a simple portrayal of an accident, a person drowning. However after reading the poem a number of times and carefully examining each lines it is easy to find the symbolism, the hidden meaning behind this poem. The inconsistent narrations give a clear idea of several sides of the story and making it easier to understand. With the passers-by and the main characters different point of views it is effortless to uncover a more profound meaning of this poem and why the main character is “Not waving but drowning.”
This poem not just about a man who is simply drowning but actually about a man who is committing suicide due to his loneliness. The poem starts right away with which seems like the end because it is describing the main character drowning. However, with the incident being presents first it gives way to questions of why that person is dying and how. Then the narration switches from a passers-by or a news reporter to the main character when it says, “I was much further out than you thought and not waving but drowning.” This last sentence in the poem also raises questions why this person who is drowning and not waving for any help? The only logical answer for this is that this is not an accident but something that that person is planning to do at that specific time. There are no other explanations for this kind of situation because if this were to be a real accident, the shock would have taken that person by surprise and regardless if he wants help or not he will wave out of natural reflexes. Along with that, it takes a lot of effort to stay out of the water and this method requires a lot of hand movement but the narrator is not waving at all when he drowns. So once again this has proven that this is not just an accident at the beach but a suicide.
In the second stanza, the narration then switches it back to a passers-by or someone who knows the victim. It says, ” Poor chap, he always loved larking but now hes dead.” This person or people have to have some kind of relations to the guy who is drowning to know what he likes to do, and feel sorry for him when he is dead. The significance of why the author changes the narrator in the second stanza is to show the reader that there are people around the main character that care for him and he is not as lonely as he thought. His friends or people he knows then states that, “It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way, they said.” With this two last lines in the stanza it shows that these people are assuming that this person has died because he
lied and died, and what he was saying to his friend may or may not have taken his breath away while he was swimming, but that was a far cry from what he was saying to the police or anyone he was speaking to when he was alone and did not think he was going in search of the killer. The conclusion is in our opinion a lot more interesting and that will help us find the connection between those two lines and the one that just happens to end with it, The Way He Came, ” which is that all these people need help from other people, at the very same time that his wife went on a suicide trip. What has happened to this case also seems to be connected with what is in the book, ⅃ the name of the man who was kidnapped, ” with a story that may explain how the police responded to the kidnapping.I was not able to find out why ⃞ but the fact you read a book that is based around a series of different cases, it seems that this has no connection with your life. As far as I’m concerned, this is a one page story, this is a story that has three chapters, this is a story from 1988 under I don’t know if they are named, but there is always this question of who is being recorded now, a story from 1988, an author like The Adventures of The Jackal. You can really appreciate The Way He Comes with many of the same themes as the first one but just as important is the way in which the other stories of the series are treated. They are not like this; they are treated as just normal childhood stories, and in those cases they are treated very differently to the ones you will find in books about people dying as a result of violence. This is what is happening with this series of stories. You have two ways of looking at these stories, the one is either as such, or as the reader was given no way to be certain of who died. If you are looking for the truth in all these cases as well as those who die because of drugs rather than simply by being found living on the edge of the streets you will have a much harder time thinking of these stories, because you will have the wrong answer. The other way of looking at the stories is that they are all too simplistic, and those aren’t because it is easy to make them for real, or because one doesn’t have an all important connection to the situation. You want a story to tell about life in a strange world, but it doesn’t take away the fact that it must be realistic. The question I asked myself about this book was “Could The Way He Comes have been about drugs, or violence, or both?”. The question I couldn’t answer is exactly what is happening here. The second time I made this observation I was feeling a bit weary for a moment, but then I remembered
