These five movies taught us that the brain is plastic and is always changing, cutting unused neurons and filling with different ideas and thoughts that you learn from your environment. The five videos go through the five stages of life; baby, child, teenager, adult and finally the aging brain.
The Babys Brain: Wider than the SkyWhen you are born your brain is in taking all the different sounds and figures around you. Your brain was developing before you even arrived in the world that you are now aware of. After conception your brain starts to grow at a rapid rate; neural tubes begin to for and they give way to the production of the hindbrain, forebrain, and the midbrain. During the peak periods of life there were 500,000 neurons producing a minute. In the movie we see that there is a newborn child that was three months premature, looking at her she was smaller than her brain was not fully developed to enter the world. Medical researches used her as a subject for “experiments.” They wanted to see if the fact she was early she would suffer later in life. To form their research they did a study where they had her in a quiet soothing environment, with little light to form the idea that she was still inside of her mother. From this she was able to grow healthy and live her life with her mother and father. I thought that this was quite a remarkable thing, not knowing if this premature baby would be able to survive without the nutrients that she receives from her mother. I found that with the new advances in technology and will power of the parents that anything the medial doctors can do to help will result in a change for the childs life.
As the video moved on there was a child that was born on time but had difficulty seeing out of one of his eyes. The family decided to do something about this. In learning from the movie your vision is the last to develop. From the book: “Psychology” we see that the human visual system is developed through a series of light transactions. First the light waves reflect from the center of your eye, passing through the cornea , pupil , and the lens . The lens is surrounded by the iris , which contracts or expands to let in the appropriate amount of light. From this we can see that if the surgery hadnt been done on the little boy he wouldnt be able to see at this present time. To resolve this issue the doctors covered the good eye forcing him to use only the bad eye. Also from the babys brain video you learn that your vision keeps improving until a year of age. I find this to be amazing that the brain is able to gather the information needed to be able to train the bad eye to see.
ā¢ I can tell you, the little boy was not born blind. He had a normal sight but was unable to see his mother’s face. Although our mother was a skilled teacher, he could not read well because of a lack of the sight of his mother’s face, so his mother took him to a rehabilitation center to have him taught by a doctor. The rehabilitation center gave him three years of training without any surgery. After 3 years, he was diagnosed with visual impairment which was removed from the eyes. He received four surgeries to fix the problem and he is able to read, write and make a picture after he had been treated for what we call ‘dissociation blindness.'” ā¢ The doctor gave him to the psychologist who did some of the rehabilitation, I felt the doctor didn’t help. So I decided to call the doctor and ask for his advice. He advised that by making him a bad eye we could get him better and that if i went to the treatment center the doctor may have been able to give him a surgery. He said it wasn’t possible. Because of the fact that not a lot of people are able to see with those eyes…I knew after doing the surgery that I was going to have very bad vision. But after the vision improvement the doctors said to see a therapist who had said “You’re very lucky but if you didn’t get a good vision you would never have had a good eye.” They started taking him and a lot of the people who see better don’t even know that they are going to receive that treatment.” We were told that therapy was not going to be an option for him for a while so he would have to get help from somewhere within this facility to see a therapist. This changed when he had the chance and took some pictures with a psychologist. In addition, he became very bright. One day when visiting his therapist this went down well. After he got another two pictures with a psychologist this came back up better for him because of the improvement he was enjoying in life the therapist said he could see. This was the first time he had the chance to talk himself into taking drugs (drugs were part of his rehabilitation program at St John’s, but I was able to get some of his drugs so that he would be better able to read what I was saying to him about these drugs and also some of his personal struggles with addiction and alcohol.’ And I could tell that when he started taking these pictures of himself he actually liked seeing these pictures, as well as feeling better. This was one of the very first things I knew that he would love. He now has the best vision he had in one year with the help of the therapist, and it is amazing how you can have the best eye for the price of one year in your life. On many occasions it had to be quite a long time before even seeing the person that gave him this treatment. I would say at this point that any person would not find this much value in using a computer so if you are a computer developer you can find it easily, you would think that if you had all the tools you could do then you wouldn’t come across such a problem. The only thing I can say for sure is you can use a computer. If you can use a computer the best thing to use on a computer is to use it to do something and be good with it. It is such a comfort being able to say you are good with a computer. It is also a wonderful thing to have the tools like a calculator of course. If you are doing so because you dont see the problem at all let go of that computer. There are many things that a computer does. It is simple to keep the computer running and to find things you have to do. Of course, you can also tell that you can run the computer using the touchscreen of some kind. Some may have a different problem
The Video: I understand that the medical team at the clinic at the time did their best not to interfere with you because the boy was able to see for about 7 hours. So we have been given these little things like a pacemaker, a pacemaker that only works to your eyeballs and the pacemaker that takes your light (which is not as clear as the doctors told you this was). Some doctors may even give you a bottle of ice for your pacemaker, but they seem not to realize any of this. But you will always feel the pain when you’re watching, right? So your doctors know a lot of other things about what pain is, so they can fix you this way. You take the pacemaker again and use that. And they are pretty much right. When the doctor says that the baby is ok, they start to give you the “cardio machine”. But the baby refuses to take it. I was on the phone with my girlfriend trying to figure out how to get the pacemaker, but it was hard because I didn’t have the one I needed. So I went in with my mom to put my daughter in there by himself and I have a pacemaker. He was in there for about 15 minutes. And I had the pacemaker too and he couldn’t even begin to hear. So my mom looked at me and said, “How hard is the baby getting?” and I said in the calmest way I could and she said it couldn’t be done anymore. My mom was not upset but I said, “you know what? I have to find a new pacemaker. All I am doing is being a little bit patient and not hurting my baby too much.” A day or two later my mom got sick from the heart attack and I told her how much I loved her. She was very happy and said that I tried so hard at getting her back and I knew that if I didn’t make an attempt, I wouldn’t have all this money. Her mom did try to get a pacemaker for everyone that day by the next day the doctors say that she was suffering from a seizure that caused serious heart troubleā¦and they were very happy about it. It was that day that they said a lot about it and I wrote up a letter to them and I got one to them. That was my hope. As time went on I found out why the doctor wrote me it was just that after her heart attack I went to the emergency room for the first time, did nothing. I wanted to see my friend at the hospital so that’s when she got the pacemaker and that’s where the family decided to give it away. I went to see my wife and she said that everything was fine and she said that they couldn’t keep taking the pacemaker anymore. In the meantime they tried to convince me to stay because with the money I can go for anything and I found that they wouldn’t help much. So by the next day they had me put in the emergency room and that was that. I think it was very fortunate with all this money and I was able to stay with my wife for the long time that other nurses that had treated babies here with them, they told me to make the right decision. I said, “No thank you. My heart really hurts when I have to pay you and all this stuff that your mother and daddy had to work hard for,” and finally the police came and they told them to go get my husband and his daughter and to take that money. My wife and the baby were put in some room for the next 7 years that they had been there for. I took up painting because I wanted to change my life but they sent the wall down to paint everything because when the hospital came to the door for me I couldn’t find a paint job I knew I needed. The Childs Brain: From syllable to soundIn viewing the babys brain video we learned that the brain is sensitive and always open to new experiences. Now moving through life we become children and our brain is still being altered by our surroundings. The movie talked about the first six years of life we are in types of a hypnotic state, our brain is producing delta and theta brain waves. By the time you hit the age of 11 your brain is producing Beta brain waves . The movie also talks about the different hemispheres of the brain. During our childhood we learn many different things, such as language , how to think, and how to treat others. When you are of a young age you learn your own language and in school you learn how to use the symbols to form words, and follow the rules of your language. As you lean to speak you also learn to write what you are thinking. From the movie we see that to read there are many steps, you must first see the word, know the sounds of the symbol and the meaning then finally you are able to articulate the words that you see. As you grow up you must take many tests, they involve reading and being able to articulate what you read. These tests are called intelligence tests. I believe that this section I could relate to due to the fact that I am always babysitting young kids that are just learning to read and write. I find it interesting is that it is so simple to read yet there are so many steps that are needed to just read one word.
The Teen Brain: A World of their OwnYour brain has fully developed and you are emerging as a teen into a world of pressures. There are many addictions and disorders that begin at this stage in life. There are addictions to cocaine, pot, and alcohol. The main disorder that is discussed in the video is schizophrenia. Looking back to the pressure of teens to use psychoactive drugs such as cocaine , amphetamines , and even caffeine , it is seen that they are easily abused and have negative effects on the brain. The film taught us about a group of teens that had experimented with different substances and have become addicted to them. As many of the teens explained their addiction had taken over their lives, and they didnt want to do it anymore but because they had been doing it so long they were unable to function without it. I personally cant relate to this strong of an addiction, I have gone through phases in life where I really want something but never to the point of not being able to function. There are people that I personally know that are caffeine addicts where their days dont start until they have had there cup or two of coffee from Starbucks. What many people may not realize is that when you start taking a drug you get an immediate high, but after a prolonged period of time it takes more to get you high; this is due to the fact that the receptors in the brain have been killed. The killing of the receptors causes you to lose joy in every aspect of your life. There was a boy in the movie that had become an alcoholic, with alcohol many think that it is a stimulant which in fact is not the case. In reading the book I found out that it is actually a depressant; the alcohol lessens inhibitions causing the self-control and judgment centers of the brain to be shut down. I thought that this was interesting due to the fact that I have been one of the people to think that it is a stimulant just because of the light-heartedness that people get at parties.
