AnthemEssay Preview: AnthemReport this essayAs the novel opens Prometheus states that what hes doing is a sin. In his society it is a sin to do things that do not involve others, and the words he thinks and writes are for no ones eyes to see or hear, but his own. In his society everyone thinks the same, and if there was anyone different than they would be sent to the Palace of Correction and Detention. As noticed early on, Prometheus was not at all the way the council wanted their society to be like. He did and thought of many things on his own without the agreement of his fellow brothers.
While all of the other people went to their sleeping houses at the same time every night as ordered by council, Prometheus would sneak off to his secret tunnel. He had it planned to where he would get to spend three hours alone in the tunnel every night and then make it back before they took count of the people. While in the tunnel he would do research on the writings on the walls of the cave as well as do experiments. He would also steal manuscripts from the scholars, and every night he would study them.
In the city that Prometheus was living in the council brainwashed the society to think that what they were doing was what they were meant to do and that there was nothing else to life besides that, and thats just the way it went. Thats where another difference between Prometheus and the society are noticed, he saw past the council and knew that there was better, and that he wanted to succeed. The rest of the society just settled for what they were told to do and never questioned whether there was a better way of life to be lived, or whether or not it was right for these people to be controlling their lives. After many nights of researching, studying, and experimenting, Prometheus succeeded in forming electricity. However, he would later find out it was only the “re-inventing” of electricity. He gets very excited, as anyone would have. He believes it can benefit the people in his society and he wants to tell them about it, but he doesnt know how to. Remember, you cant do anything alone or anything that others cant do. He figured that the council probably wouldnt appreciate his work, however, he had always wanted to be a scholar, so he decided he would present his invention to them, and they would be so grateful of him. He makes plans for when the World Council of Scholars arrives in his city to present to them his gift, the “glass box with the power of the sky.”
One night while Prometheus was working in his tunnel, he lost track of time. He rushed out to try and make it back to the Home of the Street Sweepers in time but he didnt. The council questions him on why was he late, and Prometheus refused to answer. Therefore, he was sent to the Palace of Correction and Detention. However, he was able to escape and retreat back to the tunnel and found everything the same way that he had left it. He then got back to work to prepare his gift for the arrival of the scholars. They finally arrive, so Prometheus decides to sneak into the room where they were meeting. He shows his invention to them, but they are disgusted. They didnt like the fact that he was a sagacious person, and proved to be smarter than them. The scholars told him that his invention
he was one which he had developed and that was the main change made to the world of ancient history.
