Codependency can be described as being unable to maintain a mutually satisfying relationship. Codependency can also be the result of dysfunctional developmental relationships within a family dealing with addictions. This may or may not always be a factor of codependency though, as it may also exist without the presence of addiction.
Sex and Love addiction are usually grouped together but are separate compulsions and should be treated accordingly. It is possible for love and sex to be addictive and socially destructive as compulsive substance abuse. Sex addiction can be summed up as being the uncontrollable urge to act upon ones sexual desires/behavior in spite of social impairment and harmful consequences. Love addiction is different in many ways. Mainly, love addiction can be characterized as being totally consumed with an unhealthy relationship or being dependent upon another individual and the inability to maintain healthy intimate relationship with others. It is believed that many (mainly males) who suffer from sex and/or love addiction may have also been sexually abused themselves or may have been exposed to inappropriate sexual content and may also be prone to becoming a sex addict or abuser himself.
Self-Harm can be summed up as the act of deliberately and intentionally hurting your self in a non-lethal matter such as hitting, burning or cutting yourself. It is not an attempt to commit suicide or a “cry for help”. Self-injury is an unhealthy way to cope with intense emotional pain, anger and frustration. Many self-harmers (up to 50%) have also reported being physically and/or sexually abused during their childhood. The majority of those who self harm have also reported that they were not allowed to express emotions.
