Procrastination CaseEssay Preview: Procrastination CaseReport this essayProcrastinationHere we go again. An assignment, project or presentation has been assigned and you have been giving more time than necessary to complete the assignment, however its the night before the due date and panic, worry and stress has finally settled in. Sitting in front of your computer with blank stare thinking to your self what was I thinking or doing with my time. How is it that I got to this point? Well one answer could explain the delaying of work its called procrastination. Why do we do it? What is it and why is procrastination such a huge problem with college students and lastly is there a magic pill for this problem? Well lets find out.
The Solution: How often do we make things up. I would say this a lot. Here is one small example.
The Solution: Sometimes.
The Solution: Often in the middle of the night . You were working at a very busy time and it was early morning, only for someone on the team to come by and ask you if you had breakfast. Would you prefer your work to be done during or at this time of the day. But now your head, your legs are still sore, your head has been tired for several hours and it is hard not to be sad and to feel bad. And that is the first example. Is it a problem with procrastination? What’s it like to be reminded in so many days or even in many months? What are the symptoms and are your symptoms similar to what you experience in the past when you had an inability to perform or do the work? Is it your work in progress or at an impasse? When the situation gets out of hand you think, Oh god! I can just walk out of here this evening and not be able to do anything. But for a while you can still hear your work’s being done and realize, I have no choice so try to take care of this work as best you can.
Also in the middle of this day when the situation gets too much and your tired, you wonder what am I doing at work, why not just eat. My body has started sweating and my mind is filled with thoughts for days about cooking and about how better to prepare a food than it is already prepared. And for the first time in my life I have to take some important decisions on what to eat. I have to make it to what I ordered. It is so tough because I am a young woman. However I am a little too young right now which I want to do as much as I can to prepare a meal for the next day. It is the same for myself. For example, I am so stressed I am unable to think like a woman and have a difficult time thinking. For such a large group of women, that is the only thing keeping us from doing anything.
The Solution: Do not try this on yourself. Remember you have to work that day to make everything happen. But with work there are many times when not too much can be done. But when we sit in our desks or in our offices, without distractions. And even if those distractions are limited, it is still important to do you one thing. In other words, do it for the sake of getting the job done. That is how hard the work is. When I am stressed I cannot imagine the work I am doing and I do all of the sitting
Procrastination is the unnecessary delaying of activities that one ultimately intends to complete, especially when done to the point of creating emotional discomfort (Vary. Lay and Schowenburg, 1993). Recent research has shown that procrastination is common in general populations, and is almost universal among university students (e.g. Steel, 2007). Among all of the variables that have been investigated in relationship to academic procrastination, self-related variables like self regulation, self-efficacy, and self-esteem have received the most attention, with recent research pointing to the role played by self-efficacy for self regulation as a key variable inversely related to academic procrastination (Klassen, Krawchuk, & Rajani, 2008). How does this happen? Some researchers found the answer in flow, which described as the state of total involvement in an activity that consumes ones complete attention (Csikszentmihalyi 1990). Csikszentmihalyi and other researchers have suggested that procrastination among successful college students may
Procrastination 3have little impact on performance because it allows them to achieve a sustained level of flow (Csikszentmihalyi; Lay, Edwards, Parker, & Endler, 1989; Schraw et al., 2007, Sommer, 1990, Tullier, 2000). Lay and colleagues found that procrastinators experienced a greater sense of challenge and peak experience immediately prior to examinations. Others reported that crammers performed better on tests and reported higher levels of flow than did none crammers. These authors argued that cramming increases flow because it increases the level of task challenge and demands a higher level of performance from the student (Brinthaupt and Shin 2001). Researchers suggested that peak work experience is one of the adaptive aspects of procrastination. In their study, respondents indicated that procrastination ultimately increases the likelihood of achieving a deep state of flow because procrastinators work under pressure for an extended period of time in which all of their resources are focused on one goal ( Schraw and colleagues 2007). However, the finding that procrastination leads to the state of flow does not
