He Changed My Life
Since I was a young girl I had always wanted a little brother. After hearing the news my sister was pregnant with my nephew my life has never been the same. I was an aunt now. I had a serious conversation with my father about being an aunt, in return I changed my everyday decisions, and learned to love my nephew more than myself.

I remember the day I had the conversation with my dad perfectly. It was Labor Day, 2009. The sun was shining as bright as a light bulb and the day was already perfect. My father had cooked the most delicious and juicy hot dogs on the grill and made A-1 flavored hamburgers. We were playing catch outside in the hot sun when the phone rang. I could hear my mothers soft sobs through her sweet voice, barely uttering the great news. My sister had given birth to my beautiful nephew. My father then sat me down and told me we needed to have a conversation. I felt like a ten year old kid who had just broken a window. He explained my new responsibilities as an aunt. I felt I was unprepared.

I decided to change my decisions that day. I had gone to my room and thought about everything he said. I needed to choose better friends and get rid of the misfits I had been hanging out with. I had to think about my future, what I was going to make of myself. I also had to come to terms with the fact I was not just living for me, there was someone else who would depend on me. I decided my father was right and I wrote down a list to help me follow through with my positive life changes. I wanted to be the aunt this child deserves.

I fell in love with my nephew as soon as I seen him. The next day I had gone to the hospital to visit my nephew. When I arrived at the hospital there were babies crying and people talking with excitement about their new child. I walked into my sisters room and there he was 7 pounds and 14 ounces. He had ten fingers and ten tiny toes. I picked him up and he looked at me as if weve known each other for a lifetime and he smiled. He smelled like baby lotion and his skin was soft as butter. He was the sweetest little bear cub. I knew from the moment we met, I would not, and could not choose anything over him.

I then had a list of responsibilities, a promise to my nephew I would love him forever, and a feeling in my heart that I wanted to be the more mature and responsible adult that I should have been already. I talked with my father on a regular basis to make sure Im making the right decisions. I enrolled into college and Im trying my best to stay in school. I tell my nephew everyday how much I love him and how he is the most wonderful person in the world. My nephew has made me realize there is always room to change and become a better person. He is my motivation in life and I will never let him down.
