Seventeen Magazine is a monthly girls magazine targeted at the teenage group with an age range of 12 to 24years old (with an average of 18). It has been in publish since in 1944 and is now considered to be the most popular magazine for teenage girls selling between 2.4 and 2.5 million copies each month. Seventeen is a Hearst publication and is based in New York City. Atoosa Rubenstein is the Editor of Seventeen. Before being hired at Seventeen Atoosa was the editor behind the success of Seventeen competitor, CosmoGirl! .
Although the reader range for Seventeen is 12-24 year old females, editorially Seventeen is written for the 17-24 age range. According to Lori L. Burgess, its publisher since September 1996, “Ðthe reason is, young women that are age 12, 13, 14 dont want to be 12, 13, 14. And this is really critical, they dont see themselves as 12, 13, 14. . . So the young ones read the magazine because they want to be almost the same way a reader would be with an older sister.” Readers of Seventeen are mostly at the median age of 18. These readers are buying or subscribing to Seventeen magazine to keep up with the latest fashions, trends, celebrity news, confidence, beauty and health tips to keep her looking and feeling like a star. Because of this writing style approach to Seventeen, the magazine appeals to many different (not only ages but) types of girls. The variety of styles and perspectives leaves Seventeen open to the different social groups of girls (preppy, punk, Goth, jock etc.) allowing the magazine to become a more popular and powerful icon in the magazine world.
Although Seventeen is primarily a fashion magazine littered with colorful ,trendy clothing and fashion ads Seventeen stands out from other teen magazines by giving more realistic examples of the latest expensive fashions. This can be seen throughout the magazine. Seventeen gives useable and realistic fashion and beauty advice. Each clothing
