Research key historical events that led to the following regulations being passed:
Civil Rights Act,
Provisions of the Civil Rights Act prohibited discrimination on the basis of race, gender, color, religion, or national origin. This bill was passed following up the civil war and was also faced with the veto of President Johnson. The bill was approved and turned into a law after a two third majority vote was made. It was intended for the African Americans who were enslaved and whose basic rights would be in danger. The amendment allowed anyone born on American soil would be granted these rights and become citizen, all those except Native Americans. Another group that pushed the equal opportunity for black as far work and housing was the NERL, the National Equal Rights League helped push this issue to congress and have it passed.
Sexual Harassment,
Sexual harassment is the act of intimidating one with sexual advances whether it’s for job advancement, humor, physical contact, or any unwanted sexual attention. This is how it’s defined by the EEOC. There is misunderstanding to this law that it only covers women, but the law covers both it’s the fact that women fall victim to sexual harassment far more than men do. Also the harasser can be anyone from the boss, co-worker, client and even customer. It does not stop one from teasing or some humor comments, but it only becomes a problem when it’s frequent and creates a hostile environment. But it wasn’t until the early 70’s that it was recognized on U.S. soil. Thanks to the former president of MIT who fought against favoritism and other injustice related to sexual and race discrimination. But it wasn’t until 1980 when EEOC recognized after many cases and the famous Hill case. Since then light has been shed on the issue and now organizations worry about the consequences that come with it, such as legal issues, productivity lost, moral decreases, and worst of all a bad rep.
